.

BT/P2P is part of the Internet. If you can not support it, you can not provide a legitimate Internet service.

So the pro file sharers here think all ISP's should be run at a loss? Not all ISP's are huge companies. In rural areas many are small and no big provider is interested in ever providing coverage. We have a few thousand customers I guess we should close up so the customers can wait for some big provider to come in and spend millions to get their file sharing business.

We pay about $275 per symetrical meg of bandwidth. If a customer uses his 1 meg connection 24 hours a day at 1 meg then he is consuming about $350 a month worth of resources. Bandwidth is not the only cost of running an ISP. So if this customer pays $39 per month then what is the point of having them as a customer. ISP's operate on an oversubscription model. We run on a 20x oversubscription model. This is very good in the industry. Many big providers run on a 50x model. In fact everyone on the internet oversells even the backbone providers. They have to to make money.

Where we are located it would cost about $1,500,000 per month to get a 10G connection. Then we would have to put in the infrustructure to carry it the 50 miles across the mountains to fiber.

Currently we have licensed microwave backhauls that can carry up to 800 megs full duplex. It takes two pairs to do the distance. This cost about 80,000. We would need 10 pairs. Since these require 6 foot dishes we would need to build new towers etc. So add a couple million in up front costs. All so a handfull of customers can download illegal files. This does not even begin to touch the costs of routers, switches, and other infrustructure required for this kind of bandwidth.

If every ISP had 10G links to the internet backbones would have to be upgraded to Terabit or higher connectivity. Also remember since the internet is over subscribed you would probably be hard pressed to always get 10G speeds.

People who think they should be unlimited to do what they want need to be prepared to spend more or get a life and try to run a business like an ISP. You would find your attitude changes quickly when you must guarantee everyone fair access to the internet. A couple of kids downloading music are not a priority--we have customers such as hospitals that need reliable network to save lives, or to run credit cards, teleconferencing, voip, email, etc. I am not anti bit torrent but it is not any kind of priority and is actually very abusive to network traffic no matter how big the pipe to the internet is.

Then do not call it unlimited. Is that so tough? If you are going to limit the connection then just be honest about it. If you say you are providing an unlimited connection and your are not then you are lying. Say that you only allow X amount of download in y amount of time.
