[HSI] Bad Charter Node at 68.116.79.42 affecting Oregon

I live on the Oregon Coast (Newport) and I'm having those annoying "surf pauses" for about 4-5 days. Speed tests work fine but traceroutes are showing a 100% packet loss at IP 68.116.79.42 or node name: 68-116-79-42.or.charter.com

When I surf, many sites are not getting through the first time, but when do they do come through its fast enough. So its not a speed problem but a bad server somewhere.

Any confirmations on this?

I'm still showing 100% packets loss at that node and one site says its in Medford, OR. Are there any Oregonians out there that can confirm any issues?

Having the same problem exactly... I'm in Medford (Central Point) I thought it was my router at first, but I happened to have a spare, and it happens directly to my 5100 modem as well. I got on my neighbors wireless router; he has DSL;(with permission of course) and the problem goes away.

Hurry up and fix your problems Charter!!

PS Also confirmed with friends in Talent and Medford that this is happening to them as well. Pauses on websites, lost pings, disconnects 2-3 times a day for the past 4 days. I hate to call Charter, because I always get the kid reading the tech support script which has me try all of the things I've already tried.. Hopefully someone has already informed them of this mess..

First, Charter says there is no outage and trys to blame my computer, then they decide to setup a repair call for Thurs, then I get a call saying yes, we are working in the area and the system should be fixed. But its still broken.

Just because u get 100% packet loss on 1 router doesnt mean that there is a problem. If there is an issue with that router it would be affecting a lot more people than just you. ICMP could be turned off on that router for all you know

EDIT: Is 68.116.79.42 your 1st hop outside of your own network??????

68.116.79.42 is the CMTS that you are on. It is normal for people to get 100% packet loss to their 1st hop off their network(CMTS). There are 6000 modems on your particular CMTS and 99% of them are online without any issues. So whatever issue you are having isn't being cause by this

This looks to be more a routing problem than a router problem. You should see the map in Neotrace, it's back and forth all over the country. Sprintlink.net appears to be the culprit.

I'm not responding to the trace issue alone. I did the trace after having and continue to have surfing problems for the last 5 days. I mentioned packet loss because it doesn't seem like a speed issue. I get those long pauses before and after half the page content loads or no page at all. It seems as if content is being re-routed after a time-out.
I admit I'm no expert, but its seems like a server problem to me.

Either way, I can assure you that Charter costomer service never seems to know whats going on and continues to blame the customer when its their system thats at fault. I guess I'll wait till Thursday's repair call for one employee to tell me nothing is wrong and another employee to tell me there IS something wrong.

So the tech shows up and does a line quality test. He says the modem's upstream signal is a little weak. Its 33 and should be 35-50. He adds a 3way splitter and the signal is now 39. He loads Charter's home page and says "it works now".

I hand him all the traceroutes and QCR results that Charter phone techs said to perform. It was they who setup the callout. These results show packet loss at multiple locations. He just ignores them and admits he doesn't even know what they are.

He basically says there is nothing wrong here, the line quality is within specs and leaves.

So Charter, what now? Still got lag. Been about a week now.

Interesting update. Besides the rep calling me about them doing work, I decided to reset both my modem and router tonight and got a significantly different IP address. Much different from the typical range of IPs I usually get. I also noticed a significant decrease in lag and page pauses.
Who knows, maybe its because its 3am and nobody is online. We'll see.

My biggest complaint is not the inconsistant quality, I can put up with that from time to time. What really irks me is the lack of knowledge Charter's customer service reps have regarding both hardware technology and network service/repair status. I shouldn't have to drudge through 3-4 reps, 5 days of torture and constant accusations that its my system to notify me, the customer, that they/Charter has a system problem. And they wonder why they are rated one of the worst intenet providers.

I offered to help out. Most residential techs don't have the tools to diagnose packet loss or even know how to do it.
