Too many false statements to respond to all of them. I was also a beta tester for XP, and I don't agree at all. With any part of your post.
Disagree all you want. The fact is that XP was in much worse shape at launch than Vista. But feel free to disagree. I don't care one bit.

One small aspect? Why bother having a network if you can't transfer files between machines? When I go on the road and shoot videos or take photos I store them on my laptop hard drive. When I get home I move them to my new (Vista) machine. This is something I do very frequently. One man's small aspect is another man's "mission critical".

Luckily for me, my transfer speeds have gotten much better. They still are nowhere near what they were between two XP machines over my 802.11G network.

FWhy should they develop for vista when it's being dumped and replaced? ie Windows 7
Why should we buy vista when it is going to be dumped and replaced?
Why should we buy Version N of any software at all, when there will be a Version N+1?

(And if there isn't going to be a Version N+1, then we don't want to touch Version N, because it's already at the end of its development life).
Simple answer for me. I don't/won't!
Why should I? I'm protected with NAT/firewall. That right there, tells me I have no need to play "keep up with the Jones's" and upgrade just because I can.

I'll be sticking with XP Pro for a long time to come.
If I don't dump Windows completely and go Linux, which is loaded on all machines and is the OS of choice/default boot.

If N+1 was worth it and ran without problems, then thats fine, but that is not the case.
If N+1 helped make you more productive, that's fine, but that is not the case.

If you look on usenet and BT, you'll find there are conversion programs. I've used one and, while a long process, worked perfectly.

I've been dual booting Vista with XP SP2 since Vista's release (both fresh installs at the time), on an E4500/2GB/7600GT machine, and the performance difference is more than obvious. If there were an easy way to get Media Center on my XP Pro install (without formatting and installing XP MCE obviously), I probably wouldn't bother with Vista at all. I don't have much use for it otherwise. Everything I need to do, I can pretty much do quicker in XP, which includes a lot of Photoshop work, some 3D, Flash, etc.

By that rationale why bother ever upgrading? Every few years, or even months, something new is going to come out so why ever upgrade? You had one problem with one tiny aspect of Vista. That makes the entire system flawed and not worthy of an upgrade? Nonsense. Developers had 6 years to perfect drivers and software for XP. It won't take them long to get it down for Vista, or Windows 7, or whatever is coming down the pipe. Vista runs just fine. It runs a ton better than XP did when it was released. Trust me. I beta tested both OSs and Vista is far superior at launch than XP was. The funny thing is that in 3-5 years, when the next OS comes out, the same people will be saying the same thing and bitching about the exact same issues..... Is Vista perfect, no, but neither is XP and at least Vista supports much more advanced features than XP ever will.

Now that you mention that, I have run into that one. I don't do much transfering of files around though so its not as noticable for me. I stand corrected.

I just used the SD card as an example. File transfers to and from anywhere run at a snail's pace be it over ethernet, WiFi, SD card and even folder to folder within Explorer.

XP provided some very obvious benefits over Win9x and to a lesser extent, Win2k. So being able to run XP was a very nice benefit, no matter how old the hardware was.

Somehow, there really doesn't seem to be a whole lot that would make Windows Vista worth running, especially if you're able to run XP instead.

Funny, I have noticed performance issues and I have higher system specs than required for vista.
Took me 30 minutes to record a 30 sec sound file and get it to CD. »[Vista] Access denied to My Documents
The hardware developers are still releasing new hardware that isn't fully compatible with vista, or is severely crippled.
That they are still having hardware driver issues shows how much support and cooperation there is for vista among the hardware developers.
Why should they develop for vista when it's being dumped and replaced? ie Windows 7
Why should we buy vista when it is going to be dumped and replaced?
Where are the vista ultimate perks we were supposed to be able to enjoy?
Vista fails to live up to expectations and promises.

I have a fast enough system to run Vista also, but when it takes 5 minutes to write 5MB to an SD card, something is definitely wrong with the OS.

Funny, I havent noticed any "performance issues" with Vista at all. I also have a computer that can actually run it. Funny how that works... Its the exact same thing as the switch to XP from Win 9x. If you have the hardware, it probably will run just fine. If you dont have the hardware, dont complain. And yes, the drivers were sketchy at first but I havent had any issues in a good 6 months.
