WinXP SP3, Maybe Next March 2009

Microsoft tend to, well tend not to support their older products, and actually lose money if they do. If I were Microsoft, I'd add a lot of "hidden" features in SP3 to make it slow down, open to virus attack.

And that would be illegal and you'd be making yourself a giant target for lawsuits...which is probably part of the reason (probably a small part) you aren't in a position of power in a large company...

That feature has already been added. It's called WGA.

The money they gain by forcing people to their next OS far outweighs any money lost by not supporting an old OS. If you were Microsoft, you would be out of business and in a courtroom.

What law would it violate? If the EULA is enforceable, Microsoft has exempted itself from liability for anything they may feel like doing with the OS. The antitrust rulings were diluted in the first place, are about to expire and are not seriously enforced anyway.

More important, Microsoft always has a semi-plausible, innocent-sounding explanation for each of its anti-user tricks. The logging of user activity, "phone home" features, DRM, and various inconveniences are always explained away as somehow well-intentioned or accidental.

Changes that make XP less desirable so that it will compare less favorably with Vista are well within Microsoft's bag of tricks, and they would easily get away with it.
