What kind of accomplishment is this to be proud of?

For some reason.. I just don't believe the report. I think it's more along the lines of PR.. BS. (I would like to believe them, I really would) I think there definition of "Broadband penetration" must be a bit skewed either through ignorance or through purposefulness.

Politics is the word, that is the exact opposite of progress.

Anyways, I would be happy with 20 Meg down and 5 Meg up right now. I would gladly pay sixty dollars for it a month. It would be versatile enough for me, for quite a bit of time.(Live in the city smack dab next to a major highway)

Right now what I have 3mb down, and 384 Kbps..up for around Thirty five Dollars a month. I can't even get the 6mb/384Kbs service Windstream offers!(At least its a semi stable connection)

I would like to say that the Private Sector will be what helps us as far as Broadband goes. Verizon looks like its doing the right thing investing in fiber.

This is just my Humble Opinion....

Not really trying to whine, but I would gladly pay for better tier's of service. Just not there to support. I say though, in another 50 years, the US will be better off. Because kids today are growing up and dealing with the internet and realizing the value it actually has. So I say by the time there fifty, hopefully some of them will have some money to invest. But by then, I will be Seventy something and it probably wont matter a hoot to me anyways.

Check out this link, especially #6, if you haven't already. Check out the rest of the site and do some Googling. Just as the Republican lying bastards who are in office now make up their own history, so did the Republican flack who saddled Gore with the "I made up the internet" quote that he NEVER said. Now we have to listen to our Commander in Chief say that the war on internet poverty has been won. Mission accomplished!
The fact is that the big companies are stalling the development of access to the Internet Superhighway until they find a way to control it completely. Al Gore did a great deal to pass a bill to get the countrywide internet broadband thing going back in the nineties. The big telephone and cable companies were given HUGE TAX BREAKS in exchange for them redoing the infrastructure so that everyone could get real high speeds, up to 100/100.
They have saved billions in taxes and done little to achieve this goal. If they had started going optical when they were supposed to, the job would be done by now and we wouldn't be talking about giving them even more money like our pitiful rebates. And on top of that, they have sued municipalities that have attempted to go online on their own. What did they sue them for? Restraint of trade. Yes, this is the FREE MARKET at work. Just like Enron and many others who have taken advantage of that great American tradition of deregulation.
Look it up all you "free market" dunces. Your money has already been spent by the government in subsides and tax breaks. It won't be over your dead bodies or pried from you cold dead hands. Sorry, you have already been betrayed by these unpatriotic liars. The same liars who never served in the military and yet sent thousands to their deaths on a fools errand that was really all about staying in power through the politics of fear. The same people who say Bin Laden is a "foreign power" rather than a whacked-out punk criminal who could be out of business right now if that was to the Neo-cons advantage, which it isn't.
Censorship and tolls are next. If you have been keeping track, it has already begun as our real liberties like privacy, freedom of the press and habeas corpus have been taken from us. While the war profiteers get rich, you are sitting around jerking-off with Rush Limbaugh and the other fat, stupid fools on the Murdoch Information Network and FOX Entertainment.
Sorry about the rant, but it all ties together, doesn't it. It is not speculation or conspiracy theory. It is all documented and going on right now. Guess what, if you lived in Sacramento, CA or other select places in the country where private businesses have laid their own cable in the face of the Fascist Right, you can get 100/100 right now, for about the price of U-verse.
I live in San Jose, the internet hub of the West and just this week I talked to some U-verse techs who were installing what seems like a big deal, 10/1.5 on my street. Just be glad that we have some pretty rich and socially conscious lawyers on our side who made their money getting the internet going and know what it stands for. At least we have a chance when this goes down in Congress, again.
