Re: Steep?

Sounds like a good feature.

Now I just wish they would extend that measly little 24 hour rental window. Wouldn't that just stink if your in the middle of a movie and the cable or power goes out, or perhaps your called into work, or get an emergency phone call or heck... your kid wakes up sick and you need to tend to him/her.

I think from a marketing standpoint a longer rental window would help convert the die hard blockbuster, hollywood video and netflix users. It's not only a customer convenience tool that gives a user the piece of mind when placing an expensive movie order, but also a great "one up" against DBS, IPTV, Fios, and other rental services.

I ordered Pirates of the Carribean HD last month. It's supposed to be $4.99. Wrong.... there's a PPV Event sales tax of .30 and also an Franchise PPV Fee of .30. So for $5.59 I wouldn't mind being able to have the movie a little longer. I remember we used to pick up a DVD at Blockbuster and hang on to it for a week.

Anyway I wrote Comcast with my suggestion and they gave me 5 free VOD coupons. Used one this weekend to see "Mr. Woodcock HD". That was a real funny movie, I recommend it!

If it was a new release I guarantee you didn't hang onto it for a week for $5.59. With late fees more like $20.

Not necessarily a new new release, but some movies you could. At least the very latest releases were more than 24 hours!

No late fees. Its our policy.

With no late fees, BLOCKBUSTER® gives you extra time to relax and enjoy movies on your own terms. SO even if you're a day or two late, you're still on time.

Blockbuster cleverly changed "late fees" into "automatic purchase at day 8". Po-tay-toh, po-tah-toh.

Not many Blockbusters do that anymore. My local one ditched it last summer.

Currently, my local store has changed their process completely. All new releases are 1 day rentals @ $3.99 each. After about a month on the shelf, they are moved to a different category and are now 5 day rentals @ $1.99 or $2.99. Late fees are now equal to the rental price of the movie. Supposedly, they were getting burned too much by the $.99 late fees with people keeping movies out a week at a time.

I use BB Online, so I usually don't ever pay anything in the store, but since I have unlimited in-store returns I'll get some movies now and then. I just have to be careful to make sure that I can watch those new releases in that 24 hour window so I don't get charged a $3.99 late fee for a movie I couldn't get around to watch.

It does wonders for on shelf availability though. Rather than being completely wiped out on the weekends, i've been able to go in on several Saturdays and rent whatever new release I want.
