Over fishing

Over fishing is causing this, another reason why all commercial fishing should be stop globally.

Of course, the environment is the main reason. Bottom dredging destroys the animals and the sea floor.

A sudden bout of overfishing? If it were overfishing this would have been happening already for a few years.

How about a new mutation of sea life that thinks they're tasty, or at least the HV power running through to power the repeaters 'smells' good?

Anybody plot out yet what possible direction a hypothetical cable-eater might be traveling?

(ok, and able to do something to get at it- giant crabs? Sharks with shovels? Jurassic Shark?)

Jurassic Shark?

Y'know, the one that's been sloowly cruising around since the dinosaur age, deep down, chomping on dead whales, giant squid, and the odd tin of humans?

Or it could be the great-great-grandson of Captain Nemo, I suppose...
