| sucks I'd consider someone cutting off my communications an act of war. Its like blowing up a satellite, just cheaper to repair.
Sad to say, the US is the only one with motive to do something like this... I don't see that a submarine is needed, when everyone thought it was a ship anchor. Why not use a ship anchor? |

 | Can't wait till 2009 when Pacific Unity is finally launched.
If satellite imagery showed no boats in the vacinity, and the cables went down, you have only a few senarios of what happened.
Using the power harnessed on the internet, the truth is assertainable to absolute certainty.
While no doubt Donald Rumsfeld and Rand Corporation can sometimes play tough, we can't just assertain the blame at this time.

mjwise join:2007-05-09 Ann Arbor, MI | reply to axus Pray tell, just what WOULD the US gain by cutting off sea-based fiber optic lines from Iran and other middle-eastern locales? If anything, it would seem desirable from a western point of view to have more internet access in Iran, etc., not less. Single best way to reach impressionable youth there, if anything. It's not like this is going to affect leadership (unless they're cutting cables in space), only the masses. |

Iran could have a motive as well - keeping their own people off the internet to find out what is happening outside of the country, plus providing "proof" that they are being persecuted.
It does not even need to be a country, but any "group" that wanted to isolate the region from Western influence could do the same using a boat and anchor.
You may dislike the current US government, but try to not let it completely cloud your thinking. |

| reply to TheGhost Iran already has control over their internet connection... they could simply turn it off if they wanted. As a totalitarian regime, they've done plenty of worse things than that.
I really doubt the US would get anything from going to war with Iran, in any estimation. The non-dollar denominated oil exchange theory would be the most likely.
I would expect Iran to cut all the regional cables if they were going to war with one of their neighbors. I haven't heard of them threatening anyone but the US, though. |

 | reply to axus said by axus:Sad to say, the US is the only one with motive to do something like this... I disagree. There are plenty of nations who would be interensted in cutting/tapping into these lines for spying purposes. Maybe there are multiple nations trying to tap at the same time and they have all just happend to F up around the same time. |

1 edit | reply to axus said by axus:Sad to say, the US is the only one with motive to do something like this... Actually, that is not quite true. Anybody who would like to see the U.S. blamed for this rash of cable cuts, and with the technology to run submersible equipment capable of making the cuts, could do it.
Iran, Russia, France...
P.S. Even Israel could be motivated; by the knowledge that the U.S. would take the heat for their covert activity along these lines.
