Re: HELP! With 96 Monte Carlo!

Alright, that actually sounds like an easier route. Thanks.

If you own and can use tools with some proficiency, then I would suggest getting a used steering gear and swap the entire unit. You will not be able to replace the lower collar bearing without special equipment. Changing the entire unit is your best bet.

I really have no choice on this issue I have no money and always get used by the machanics. I will have to try and fix it even just till I can get it too a machnic.

Thank you though. That it least gives me a place to look.

Sounds like the rack and pinion unit is coming apart. There is a bearing that can fail, and cause the steering to lock in one place, or as in your case, just go one way. Do NOT try to drive it somewhere, as it is possible to have it totally lock in one position.

Think pretty hard about fixing this yourself. I suspect you will be in over your head fairly quickly, and a steering system is no place to try out your skills.

Ok, so for some reason no warning nothing my 1996 Monte Carlo waited till I got home to do this but its really weird. I have no choice but to fix it myself and Im hoping I can.

For some reason it will turn right but not left. I can turn it left up until the wheels straiten out but I can not get them to turn left. I am looking for any possible ideas. Im thinking a bearing, maybe a stabalizer bar, or the stearing column or power stearing. There are no leaks other than my regular coolant drip but other than that plenty of fluid. And it gave me no warnings. I just put new breaks on not too long ago but they havent given me any trouble.

Please if someone has any ideas.
