During WWI, one of the first thing the Brits did was to cut the transatlantic cable from Germany to the United States. Made it easier to spread their version of facts in the war, and also led to even more anger when Germany sent the Zimmerman Note, since they sent it to Mexico over a telegraph line from the German Embassy in D.C. that was paid for by the US gov't earlier in the war.
Go back even further than that, and you'll find plenty of instances of telegraph lines being cut during the Civil War as well. Hitting an enemy's communications are a critical part of wartime strategy, whether internal or external. |
