High gain Panel antennas?

Anyone here use an external Panel antenna to pick up a signal better? how well do they work? and the all use USB to attach to your computer?

patch antenna is the way to go, not "panel"; maybe semantics.

Like 12dBi or so gain.

Do you NEED the gain? Need a bit of math and measurements to decide if a simple USB WiFi adapter, elevateda and in the clear, would do.

Stay away from the consumer/retail 10dBi patch antennas from Belkin and the like. Badly engineered. Buy a real one, in the $30 area, from a company such as
www.hyperlinktech.com/
or
demarctech.com

Thanks.
I only need a bit of gain, but I mainly need it away from the two walls that are between me and the router.

Does Hyperlinktech. have any that run off of USB?

I doubt it. You are talking about a WiFi USB adapter.
Two walls and 100 ft. should be no problem.

Thanks,

I was goint to try 2 16ft lengths of Active USB cable. This is sposed to have less loss over the length of the cable, which is what I need going that far.

Right - USB cables carry the digital USB signals, not RF at 2.4GHz as does antenna coaxial cable. The latter can be attenuated quickly in coax, especially small diameter/cheap coax.

Supposedly you can daisy-chain 4 USB hubs with each on a 16 ft cable. One 16 ft. passive cable and one active extension would likely work. The active cables are, essentially, a self powered USB one-port hub.

For a year or so, I had a $20 USB WiFi dongle on the end of a 12 ft USB cable, elevated up high. Gave good 54Mbps connectivity to a w-router 50 ft. away and with 2 drywall walls in the way. Lath and plaster is worse.
