DSL Filter

If I don't attach the DSL filter that came with the install package will that affect the performance of my connection? I'm new to DSL so any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the modem is going to be plugged into its own jack with nothing else no filter is needed. Any other phone jack that has a phone, satellite receiver, fax, and so forth plugged into it needs a filter. You can add splitters to the filters so you are able to plug in more equipment into the same jack, that works just fine (i.e. a phone and a fax machine in the same jack).

If you do not filter the jacks it could cause no connection at all (no synch), static on your phone line (if you have phone service), dropped connections, and slow speeds.

Well my d/u is horrible, but I also have the slowest possible dsl connection that CenturyTel offers. I also live in the small town of Potosi so I'm sure thats part of the problem. Is there anything I can do to improve my downs and ups?

What speed do you have, the 1.5MB? What speeds are you getting when you do a speed test on »www.speedtest.net? Click on the yellow pyramid and post back here I'll be on tonight yet.

My d/u was 199/115. I think we have the cheapest package. So 360/120, unless I am mistaken.

Ok, you have the 256/128. The download could be a bit better, but you might be on some high gauge copper and at a far distance which could be why the speeds are lower, those are usually the largest factors. I doubt there are bandwidth issues in Potosi, although they do have some over subscribing in some Missouri cities/towns unfortunately. That type of situation does happen and does take some time to fix but again, it shouldn't be happening.

Anyway, your speeds are fine for that rating, but like I said, the download could be better. Were you running anything else in the background when you did the speed test?

Yea. I failed to mention that though. I'm downloading a Microsoft Office 2007 Trial for College. It is 385 mb's and it has taken around 3 hours already and its only at 70%.

Ahh, ok, that makes sense. Your speeds are fine then, of course you could upgrade your service if you wanted to pay a little more. If you don't mind, IM me your address or telephone number and maybe I can assist you further with the whole speed issue.
