 [cable] Low Bandwidth

I have 3Mb/s service from Charter. I'm renting a Motorola Surfboard SB4100 from them, which is connected to a DLink DI-524 wireless router.

Lately I've noticed web surfing getting noticeably slower. I came here and did a few speed tests, and I average 900 kb/s down. I tried the test on three different computers with the same result. For some reason, I thought to try powercycling the cable modem. Afterwards, I had speed tests of 2500 to 3000 kb/s (sometimes more), right where I'd expect them to be.

I've done this twice now on different days. The speed seems to hold up for awhile (days?), then drops down again.

Anyone have any thoughts on what is going on?

Thanks!

I had the same situation and they swapped out my modem for an ambit generic modem. Everything is fine now.

I'm haing some similar type problems but it's my upload speeds that is the problem plus some modem disconnects every day or two.
And I think it's cable plant problems and intermittent noise.
I've been complaining for weeks and I'm trying to get a Coporate Escalation going since I'm not having much luck with the local people or the Plant Manager so far.
Most every tech I talk to here and a Tech Support Supervisor I talked to a couple hours ago about my disconnect then (who said he saw signal fluctuations in their logs) has said that my Upstream Pwr should not be jumping from like 41 to 48 to 50 and back and forth at times.
I personally think there is an Amplifier in my cable plant someplace that has a flaky Upstream channel since when I do lose connection and the mode cycles and tires to connect it does acquire the downstream but not the upstream and just keep cycling until it finally does connect.
Intermittent noise can affect your speeds.
Check your modem logs for No Ranging Response - T3 Timeout
a sure sign of noise or connection problems in the cable plant.

These are the kinds of log entries I get during the connection loss.

@charter.com

Thanks for the pointer... I didn't know I could check the log for the modem.

When the modem, it seems to be having trouble downloading the cable modem configuration file ("Invalid Type"). Is this how it should go for Charter, or not?

They still have the 3Mb in your area? Call and see if you can the "free" upgrade to 5/512.

Any quick power outages in your area lately causing the the modem/router to go off/on and lose sync, which a reboot of those would fix?

Yeah, last I checked they still had 3 Mb but its looking like that might be dropped in the near future.

No, haven't had any power outages here in awhile.

What you are seeing is not the download of the configuration file, but the time of day. This would not affect your bandwidth.

Could you post your signal levels from the modem?

Try Hooking your PC directly to the modem (without your router) and see if the speed still declines the same as it does when your router is hooked up.

I'm not accusing your router but I had a DI-524 a few years ago and I know how old they are.

Signal levels at least look OK. CBN tech already gave the next step in the troubleshooting, run a direct connection from your modem to one PC and test again (don't forget to power-cycle the modem).

Thos DI-524 aren't just old, they also can cause some issues with VPN connections because the firmware doesn't support some configurations.
