Way to go Dems, it only took a year for you to go from cleaning up Washington, to pandering and outright corruption.
Was there ever any doubt? Neither party is truly interested in "we the people". Only their own special interests. Personally I prefer the term Republicrats or Democans to refer to the critters we have stashed in Congress. It is definitely more descriptive.

In terms of this bill, the Republicans support it because it helps their big business interests and involves their favorite pass-time, surveillance. For the Democrats, it supports their Hollywood buddies.

The piracy provision was a very small part of a HUGE education grant renewal bill. Most of the votes didn't hinge on this one provision. So, support for the bill had hardly anything to do with this provision. You are looking at it from a very narrow focus. The House of Reps aren't.

P.S.> Here is the one section that deals with piracy:
SEC. 494. CAMPUS-BASED DIGITAL THEFT PREVENTION.

`(a) In General- Each eligible institution participating in any program under this title shall to the extent practicable--

`(1) make publicly available to their students and employees, the policies and procedures related to the illegal downloading and distribution of copyrighted materials required to be disclosed under section 485(a)(1)(P); and

`(2) develop a plan for offering alternatives to illegal downloading or peer-to-peer distribution of intellectual property as well as a plan to explore technology-based deterrents to prevent such illegal activity.

`(b) Grants-

`(1) PROGRAM AUTHORITY- The Secretary may make grants to institutions of higher education, or consortia of such institutions, and enter into contracts with such institutions, consortia, and other organizations, to develop, implement, operate, improve, and disseminate programs of prevention, education, and cost-effective technological solutions, to reduce and eliminate the illegal downloading and distribution of intellectual property. Such grants or contracts may also be used for the support of a higher education centers that will provide training, technical assistance, evaluation, dissemination, and associated services and assistance to the higher education community as determined by the Secretary and institutions of higher education.

`(2) AWARDS- Grants and contracts shall be awarded under paragraph (1) on a competitive basis.

`(3) APPLICATIONS- An institution of higher education or a consortium of such institutions that desires to receive a grant or contract under paragraph (1) shall submit an application to the Secretary at such time, in such manner, and containing or accompanied by such information as the Secretary may reasonably require by regulation.

`(4) AUTHORIZATION OF APPROPRIATIONS- There are authorized to be appropriated to carry out this subsection such sums as may be necessary for fiscal year 2009 and for each of the 4 succeeding fiscal years.'.
The White House is threatening to veto this over many of the other provisions. And the Senate doesn't have a piracy provision in their version. It is very possible the piracy provision will die in conference committee before going to the White House for signature.

P.S.> Sometimes I despair of the level of ignorance of our legislative system by the typical US voter. I sometimes think voters should have to take a test before they are allowed to vote. Maybe then we would have better legislators.

Take a test and see if you should be allowed to vote

Let's extend that test to the political candidates as well.

Not too bad. But you have to start looking at the front page of a newspaper more often. Or going to Google News to stay up to date.

The only thing that useless test determines is whether you watch a lot of network TV news (a negative in my opinion because of the news channels' constant attempts to influence voters with partial and out-of-context sound bytes and video snapshots), and has nothing to do with knowledge of the type you are displaying. A test to see if you are informed it says, unless matching a face to a name and office is informed, that's a lie. Many of the people are actors, what do they have to do with being politically informed? The whole thing is a joke.

Test people on what their representatives and candidates are voting for and proposing, not what they look like.

Kang: It's a two party system! You have to vote for one of us!
Man: He's right, this is a two-party system.
Man 2: Well, I believe I'll vote for a third-party candidate.
Kang: Go ahead, throw your vote away.
