| [HSI] Charter HSI slowdown on MS Vista
Hello to all.
If you are experiencing internet slowdowns with VISTA, you might want to try the following. I was getting 1.7MBx1.0MB on a 10x1 Charter HSI line...I new something was wrong as my Win2k3 servers where seeing the full bandwith but Vista was not. After searching Technet, I discovered that this not only resolved internet slowdowns but also network transfers to and from Win2k3 server.
I found I needed to do the following:
For everyone running Vista, there is a know issue with the TCP stack. In order to circumvent this you need to disable a couple of "autotuning features". These features are really used when Vista is in a 2008 server environment. If you are not, then they actually slow vista's tcp stack down.
SP1 of Vista will address these issues. (So MS claims)
1) If you are running vista with User Access Control on open a command prompt by right clicking on it and selecting "Run as Administrator" from the popup menu.
2) In the command prompt window type each of the commands below followed by pressing the enter key between each:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled netsh interface tcp set global chimney=disabled netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
Re-run your speed tests and you will see the difference. |

| This has been posted all over the place already, but in case anybody is in a hurry, before SP1, it does work.
An almost easier fix though, is to remove Vista and go back to XP or even W2K!! -- The Firefox alternative. »www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/ |

| I haven't run across anyone who likes Vista. I'll stick with Win 2k as long as possible. |

I'd take W2K over Vista myself, if I didn't have the option of XP. -- The Firefox alternative. »www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/ |

| reply to underwmd Gamer's in my Clan have all reported many "delay" issues with Vista. For some reason it doesnt handle UDP packets like previous version of windows and it creates a tad of what we refer to as "lag" . Pings will be fine but the games on vista seem to feel heavy and not as responsive.
Games like COD4, BF series, etc all seems to have some sort of shot delay thru vista. They resolved the issues by going back to XP. I am not sure if this is related to the same issue as the OP but its sounds like it might be.
From the input of 20 of my gamer's I would NOT reccomend Vista at this point until games optimized for it are released.
i.e. DirectX 10 |
