[HSI] data light blinking constantly

I've noticed since at least Friday 2/8 that the data light on my modem is blinking constantly. I know a couple years ago we discussed this, and it had to do something with a new type of signalling that was being used, but after a little while it stopped. I really dislike this because I expect my light to not blink unless I am transmitting or receiving. With it flashing all the time now, who knows if I have some virus that is using my machine as a zombie. I like to see the blinking only when I know my machine should be transmitting or receiving.

If you're concerned that your PC is infected with "some virus", have you performed anti-virus and anti-spyware scans? Do you use a software firewall (so that you have to give permission before your PC can send out data)?

A smart move is to use an NAT/SPI router (not all that expensive these days) between the cable modem and your PC. You will note that the light at the router's input flashes endlessly, but the light at the router's output will only flash when your PC sends or receives data.
