How to identify a HD inside? No really...

Say you have 6 HDs inside a PC - they are all of the same size and same manufacturer...

You want to take out HD X:\ with it's data...

Is there any way to single it out?

Maybe by matching serial # from HD info that the system pulls up? But I can't successfully do that - the serial on drives is different from what the system shows... it's some other serials...

I can order the specific drive to defragment thus causing it to make a ton of noise and thus manually locating it - but that's not the best way...

There's got to be some way...

Thank you...

The only way I've been able to do it is to just pull the power on one drive at a time until the drive letter or data of the drive disappears the next time the machine is up and running.

Do you have status LEDs for each HDD? If so, you can try the following (it works on my PCMCIA card): disable the HDD in device manager, and the corresponding LEDs should power off.

Assuming you are running XP, go into Computer Management / Disk Management and look at the order in which the drives are mapped (Disk 0, Disk 1, etc.). If you can determine the order which your bios recognizes drives, you should be able to figure out which drive you need to pull by which motherboard port it is plugged into. (i.e., Disk 0 should be first port on primary controller, etc.)

will give you the serial numbers printed on the outside of the drives. I don't know if it would be able to see data through a RAID controller if one is involved. There may be other utilities that also have the capability. Have you checked the website of your drive manufacturer?
