Friday night, I used the registry hack from here (click on the hyperlink that says "at your own risk" to d/l the zip file I used):

Ignore the crap about d/l'ing from BitTorrent sites. You won't need to do that when you can get it directly from MS Windows Updates after you run the registry hack "at your own risk".

After it got me to d/l and install two (three for some) smaller Windows Updates prerequisites, then it magically had Service Pack 1 show up as a Windows Update. I downloaded that and installed it on my desktop. I ended up with Service Pack 1 installed and no issues at all. I can't say that will happen for everyone, because I'm the luckiest SOB there is when it comes to Service Pack installations, evidently.
