| Earthlink DNS servers are broken
Yesterday the Earthlink DNS servers were nearly completely down. Today they are better, but still having intermittent problems resolving some names to IP addresses. For example:
C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen McCants>nslookup Default Server: optns1.earthlink.net Address: 207.69.188.171 > www.kxan.com 207.69.188.185 Server: [207.69.188.185] Address: 207.69.188.185
Non-authoritative answer: Name: a37.g.akamai.net Addresses: 8.7.28.139, 8.7.28.148 Aliases: www.kxan.com, www.kxan.com.edgesuite.net
> www.kxan.com 207.69.188.185 Server: [207.69.188.185] Address: 207.69.188.185
DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. Non-authoritative answer: Name: a37.g.akamai.net Addresses: 8.7.28.148, 8.7.28.139 Aliases: www.kxan.com, www.kxan.com.edgesuite.net
> www.kxan.com 207.69.188.185 Server: [207.69.188.185] Address: 207.69.188.185
DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Request to 207.69.188.185 timed-out
As you can see, I've run three identical queries against their main DNS server. The first time it succeeded. The second time it succeeded on retry (almost failed). Finally, the third time it completely failed. Mind you, I get these results connected directly to the cable modem with two different computers.
While Earthlink seems to be in denial that their is anything wrong, I've fortunately found a good workaround. Their opt out DNS servers are working perfectly (as near I can tell):
207.69.188.172 207.69.188.171
Details on these servers are located here: »kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?article=187117
I hope that helps other people who are suffering from Earthlink's inability to run stable DNS servers.
Sincerely, Stephen |

  Yeah
@comcast.net
| You should have been using the .171 and .172 to begin with since Earthlink uses IP Redirection on their main servers.
Earthlink and Time Warner Cable have been having issues for weeks and they keep putting a recording on at Time Warner saying they are working to resolve the issue and this has been consistent for multiple days now.
After Time Warner Cable is spun off from Time Warner, it will be interesting to see what happens with Earthlink Cable. Open access was a requirement of the consent decree when Time Warner merged with AOL. Now Time Warner is likely going to split Time Warner Cable and divest of AOL.
I do believe that things will get better down the road. |

| reply to Falchion14 Yep. Same problem here in South Brooklyn w/Earthlink Cable for the last week or so. Numerous calls to both Earthlink and TWC did not help. One of the Earthlink tech mentioned a national problem !!! Changed my DNS settings 2 days ago seems to be fine now. |

| reply to Falchion14 I've been having issues lately on EL via Comcast. Lots of packet loss. The loss is on Comcast servers, but I wonder if it's somehow related: »/linequality/nil/2348183 -- Why not? |

@mindspring.com
| Hi Speedy,
Presuming you are using Windows XP and directly connected to your cable modem, you can follow these instructions:
»support.microsoft.com/kb/305553
If you are using a router in between your computer and the cable modem, then you'll have to consult the documentation for your router, but it is typically configurable inside the router's web page. Unfortunately all the router models and brands are a little different so I won't be able to help you there.
Hope that helps.
Sincerely, Stephen M |

| reply to Falchion14 Glad to know I wasn't the only one with this problem last week. I was ripping my hair out, tried an SSH telnet proxy, but that was very slow too, then switched over to Sprint evdo USB (PDAnet is a blessing). Called TW support, the nice rep transferred me over to RR for $29/month for 12 months, ditched Earthlink. Transfer was instantaneous, just had to reset modem. Smooth sailing ever since. |
