Help - How to reconfigure AT IP Pool?

All,

I am trying to setup my network in order to be able to use the HMDVR capabilities and am having some trouble. Some background, I upgraded to the Triple play recetly adding FIOS TV to an already existing FIOS installation. My ONT does data over Ethernet so I had cat5 running from the ONT to my Buffalo WHR-G54S router. The tech installed the ActionTec and bridged it to the Buffalo as I wanted to continue to use it to supply IP addresses for my wired/wireless Lan devices.

So far everything's working like a champ, streaming recorded content to the other STB in the house, VOD, etc. The one thing I can't get to work is the MediaManager software and the HMDVR. I've set everything up on the PC and the HMDVR can't see the shared content.

I suspect that this is because the IP pool for the ActionTec is 192.168.1.* and the IP pool for the Buffalo is 192.168.0.*. Knowing this I attempted to set the ActionTec into the 0.* pool as I have 22 statically configured IP addresses(.0.101 - .0.122, Buffalo is set to .0.100) on the Buffalo for my Lan and don't want to reconfigure them.

So what I did was under My Network, configured the Home/Office connection such that the IP address of the ActionTec is 192.168.0.1 and set the range to between .0.2 and .0.254. This caused a few issues. One, I could not longer hit the Internet while connected through the Buffalo, I could only hit it when directly plugged into the ActionTec, even though the Buffalo was able to pull a 192.168.0.2 address from the ActionTec, it refused to provided Internet connectivity. I also lost the ability to browse/login to the ActionTec, I would get page not found. It also appeared to kill IP leases to the HMDVR and the STB as they were no longer visible in the network devices list.

Has anyone tried changing the ActionTec IP Pool and had it play nice with your existing equipment? Any idea what I may doing wrong here?

Ultimately I'd like to put the Buffalo in front of the AT and keep the AT just for VOD/Guide data. I torrent and game a lot and have been seeing a fair amount of 'Page not found' errors lately, suspect it's related. That's down the road a bit. I just saw anomaly66's post about doing this but it's a bit complex and I'm not quite ready to tackle that one - and hear everyone in the house bitching that the TV's not working

Re: Help - How to reconfigure AT IP Pool?

First off, you are trying to use two different sub-nets (0.* and 1.*). That's a problem unless you have setup routing rules between the two routers. i.e. Without explicit routes, traffic on one subnet doesn't know how to get to the other subnet. This is why you can't get to the AT from the 0.* subnet.

Since you are already on cat-5 from the ONT, your best bet is to follow the instructions in

»How-to: make ActionTec MI424-WR a network bridge

to put the AT behind your buffalo router.

If you are not ready to tackle that, then here are some things to try:

1) For these instructions, you will need to connect a PC directly to one of the 4 LAN ports on the AT. I am also assuming that DHCP is enabled on the Buffalo. If you are going to leave the Buffalo behind the AT, you will also need an ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on the AT to a LAN port on the Buffalo. Do not use the WAN port on the Buffalo, as long as the AT is in front.

2) Do an IPCONFIG /RELEASE followed by IPCONFIG /RENEW. At this point you should have a 1.* IP address.

3) Login to the AT.

4) Save your current AT config file.

5) Select MY NETWORK. From the menu on the left, select NETWORK CONNECTIONS. Select NETWORK (H/O). Click SETTINGS.

6) Enter an unused static IP address from your 0.* subnet.

7) Further down, on the IP ADDRESS DISTRIBUTION line, select DISABLED from the pull-down.

8) Click APPLY. The AT will reboot. At this point, your will lose connectivity to the AT.

9) Wait for the lights on the AT to stop flashing. Do an IPCONFIG /RELEASE followed by IPCONFIG /RENEW again. At point you should now have a 0.* IP address assigned by the Buffalo.

10) At this point you can swap the positions of the routers if you wish. Move the cat-5 from the WAN port of the AT to the WAN port of the Buffalo, leaving the connection between the LAN port on the AT and the LAN port on the Buffalo.

Edit: If you are going to swap the positions of the routers, be sure to release the BROADBAND ethernet DHCP lease before swapping routers.

Re: Help - How to reconfigure AT IP Pool?

Thanks for replying. I am aware that they are on different subnets, see where I reconfigured the AT into the 0.* pool to match that of the Buffalo. It was this configuration that restricted all access to the AT unless I was plugged directly into it(I have disabled the wireless antenna). That is the gist of my posting, i.e. why I can't get internet/lan connectivity if I am connected to the buffalo even though they are both in the same IP pool.

I will give your suggestions a try. A question, in order to bypass the paltry NAT table on the AT would my only option be to put the AT behind the buffalo?

Also, is the ethernet port on the ONT accessible? I would need to run a much longer cable from it to reach the Buffalo if I were to put the AT behind the buffalo.

Sorry, I missed where you said you had set the AT to 0.1.

Does a PC plugged into the AT get a 0.* IP address?

It is best if only one router has DHCP active. It is possible to set the DHCP ranges so they don't overlap, but that is asking for trouble on the AT. The AT handling of DHCP is quirky.

Make sure the routers are connected LAN port to LAN port, not LAN port to WAN port.

I believe other have has success putting the AT in bridge mode, bypassing the NAT table on the AT. Some have created VLANs. There are a number of threads on the subject. Whether this works seems to be dependent on the both the rev. level of the router, and the firmware version. There have also been issues with bricking the AT and other broken functionality when VZ pushed buggy firmware. So make sure you have a firmware image and matching configuration file saved to rollback to if you need to.

I don't know how the cat-5 is terminated inside the ONT. I suspect it is a 110 style punch-down. My installer ran CAT-5 from the ONT to my service closet, where he installed a surface mount RJ45, and a short patch cable from that to the AT. In any case, I doubt VZ wants customers messing inside the ONT.

It is also possible to run put the AT and your own router on separate subnets. You just need to do setup static routes between the two. A no-brainer on most routers, not necessarily intuitive on the AT.
