FIOS is West Los Angeles/ Westside

I looked on the boards and on FIOS website and it seems that some areas of Santa Monica have FIOS available. Mostly the area above Montana. I am wondering if anyone knows when Verizon plans to rollout FIOS to all of Santa Monica? I live on Centinela, above Wilshire, and just curios if, and when, the rollout will occur for the greater Santa Monica area.

Verizon strung up a whole bunch of fiber around the Pico corridor in Santa Monica in December, but as of yet they haven't lit it up. I can see all the fiber bundles on the poles and they pulled underground in my neighborhood too, but there has been absolutely zero activity since then. I have no idea when it's going to be lit either.

Is there anyway we can find out when they want to bring up the whole Santa Monica area. cause I think it is unfair to do above Montana, which is the most prosperous area in Santa Monica, and not light up any other area. Above Montana has had FIOS for about 5-6 months or longer, and there is no ETA on FIOS towards the outer areas of Santa Monica like Centinela Avenue.

Fair has nothing to do with it. Verizon will light up where it's the most profitable. Above Montana it's affluent single family homes with high uptake of broadband AND extra phone services, so Verizon will light up there first since they can be pretty sure they'll have good penetration. Around my neighborhood it's mostly renters, the uptake of broadband has been pretty slow, and I'd venture that most of the DSL service is the low priced tier and most folks have cell phone service rather than landlines, so installing fiber here doesn't look anywhere near as profitable. Santa Monica also has a whole bunch of extra regulatory hoops to jump through for any utilities doing business here, so that's got to put a big damper on rollout.

You'll just have to be be patient and wait like everyone else. If you're desperate, you can always order extra dry loop DSL lines and bond them.

Does Verizon DSL support true *bonding*?

I know there are dual routers out there (we did Verizon DSL and Comcast broadband that way for a couple of years) and with protocol / port binding, you can configure which ISP your application will use, for example. However, I have never heard that Verizon DSL actually offers bonding where you do essentially double your pipe transparently.

I thought I read somewhere that Verizon will do bonding on their end for business DSL in certain areas, but I may misremember and it was other service providers using Verizon lines (like DSLExtreme). I was thinking more of using a Linux box as a router and having it do load balancing, which is a cheap way of getting higher speeds in areas that don't have FIOS.

Yes, though load balancing is not the same bonding We were very happy with our Linksys RV04 -- it was pretty easy to configure, e.g. hubby used ISP with higher upload for bit torrenting and I used the other ISP with higher downloads for Usenet binaries, etc...

I have been trying to coordinate an install for months now in santa monica. have been bounced around to 4 different people and scheduled a 2nd site visit which the guy was a no-show for today. is this typical???

I don't know what's "typical", but I just had FIOS installed down here in Torrance and everything went like clockwork. All the different guys came to the house in their alloted times, and the system was installed on the day I specified when I made my initial order. I hope you get things straightened out.

Finally have the equipment installed after months and months of delays. It is an MDU installation so took 2 motorola 6000 ONT's and some serious mounting work. Hoping it gets turned on soon.

I sent a message to the City of Santa Monica, and they contacted Verizon on my behalf. And it seems that the install for FiOS in Santa Monica, near Centinela, between Santa Monica Blvd. and Montana, will take place in 2009.

Here is the copy of the e-mail I received from Verizon:

Mr. XXXX

I spoke to the Engineering Manger for this project and your address falls within the Bundy Santa Monica wire center. This wire center is on the potential build out list for 2009. It has not been engineered yet. It may be built as early as the 3rd quarter of 2009 but this is not definite yet.

Please feel free to email in the future and I will certainly provide you and additional updates as I receive them.

Thanks for your interest in Verizon FiOS.

I had a talk with one of the apartment building owners near my house. Apparently, this guy heads up the local owners group and they've essentially stopped Verizon from installing FTTP along the entire block until Verizon agrees to a damage clause in the contracts they're offering the owners. Basically this guy got screwed over by the former Adelphia cable company (now Time Warner) when their installers punched a hole right through the high tech built-in wall/ceiling heaters. They did nearly ten thousand dollars damage (he had to tear out the entire ceiling to repair the system) and they refused to reimburse him. Since the lawyers fees would have eaten up most of the damage award in a lawsuit, plus there was no guarantee of prevailing, he ate the entire cost instead.

So now my block is completely fibered up on the poles, but there's not going to be any further action until Verizon agrees to add a damage clause to satisfy the local owners. And I have to say, no matter how badly I want fiber, I have to agree with this guy -- Verizon better pony up if they want these customers.

Stop complaining. At least you're not stuck in an ATT area like me.

So looks like FIOS for you sometime in 2010.

I called them and they gave a general time frame for my area. Worth a shot.

I have been away to grad school for a while, and I just came and visited my family, and it looks like they have installed the FiOS wires on the pole already, although they told me that service would be rolled out in early 2009. So i guess they have set it up, but need to bring it to the home. The wires are new and looks like the ones that were posted here on this board.

I guess they are doing the build out to the poles then setting times to do blocks for ftth.
