 [Rant] Running for office...

I have a BIG problem with people who are running for an elected office while holding another elected office.

An example...
The senators who are at present running for President..

Now I have no issue with them trying to get re-elected to the office they presently hold but I think that if they want to run for a different office, they should do it on their time, not the countries, as such I would love to see a law passed that required them to leave office before running for any other office...

I feel that their campaigning for the other office detracts from their ability to do the job that they were elected to do...

Am I alone in this thinking????

You may be along in thinking that anything that detracts from politicians doing their "job" is necessarily a bad thing.

But I can't speak for other people, I can only speak for me. And speaking for myself, I lost faith in politicians (of any stripe) long ago.

The way I look at it, if there are enough things "detracting" from their jobs, (reelection campaigns, taking bribes from lobbyists, hookers, etc.) our legislators may well end up doing nothing.

And usually, doing nothing is the very best we can hope for from them.

Hit that nail on the head.

Ever watch 'em on CSPAN? Their aides do all of their presentations and cue cards. And they still can't get it right.

So for them, holding office while running for another isn't any different than a car salesperson handing you off to the credit department while he runs to his next victim....

They all should do as Jesse Ventura. Get in and get out, no career politicians. It makes for too many lobbyists.

I'm dating myself here, but C-Span used to be absolutely hilarious.

What I mean is: years ago, C-span's camera was actually allowed to scan the floor of the legislature whilst someone was making a speech.

And what I recall seeing, invariably, was some politician making an absolutely impassioned speech about how his Grandma's iron lung was about to give out and he needed another shilling for the meter (or whatever).

And then the camera would perform a slow pan of the floor........and you'd see a grand total of three congressmen there. And two of them would be asleep.

Of course, if there's one thing that Authority Figures absolutely cannot stand, it's looking bad. So in the early-mid 90s, (anyone remember the date) C-Span's camera became a fixed camera, rather than one roving the floor and documenting the Slackerdom for all to see.

Which meant that, from then on, the pols simply needed to make sure that they were sitting within that fixed camera's field of view to make it look like they were all present and correct.

Sad.

I agree with you. I don't think there's another career path in this country where you can basically abandon the duties of your current job to look for a new one and still keep earning money from it. Then in the end if the campaign doesn't work out, you just return to the job that you abandoned like nothing happened.

It's a great idea really. I'm sure most people in the workforce would love some sort of "job trial" system where you can dip your toes into a position at another company for a year while your old job is held open for you.

Aides can't vote on the floor of the House or Senate...
