Re: Embarq network congestion, latency and packet loss in IN

I have been following this issue since an outage was reported on this area last week. The outage was cleared, however since you guys are reporting the same problem I would like to investigate this issue further. I need to collect data samples from anybody who is still having this issue to be able to escalate to the engineering department.
Please send me your phone numbers via personal message or email only and the speeds/latency you are getting. Please include the site or method you used to run the speed test.
Also, you may want to run a speed test using one of our dedicated FTP servers. Please follow this link for the IP address of the server in your location.
To run the test follow these steps:
1- Click start, run and type: ftp 205.244.194.35 and click OK
2- Type ftp and hit enter
3- Type ftp and hit enter one more time. It should say "Anonymous access granted, restrictions applied"
4- Type hash and hit enter
5- Type ls and hit enter
6- type get test.1meg and hit enter.
7- Multiply the number before Kbytes/sec by 8 and that will be your real time speed
Example 327.07 Kbytes/sec x 8 = 2616.56 kbps
Interesting that you ask us to measure speed using an FTP server that is only one hop away from Embarq's core routers in Mansfield Ohio (crohmnfd). Any east-coast Embarq customer with a half-decent copper loop is going to get a near-perfect measurement. The recurring problems have already been clearly documented to be at the hand-off between Embarq and Sprintlink. It sucks paying for a 10M circuit that only gets 1.5M to anywhere outside of Embarq's network between 3PM and 11PM. Of course I always get a near perfect 10M connection to Embarq's test FTP server, which DOESN'T GO THROUGH THE CONGESTED HANDOFF to the rest of the Internet.

This a pretty good explanation:

Latency is not ok for me. Everything still jams up in Mansfield Ohio where it jumps an additional 100mS :

It seems Embarq upgraded or changed something for Lapel, IN. First hop is now more reasonable. First Embarq hop is now 15ms instead of around 33ms for those on fast channel.

Thanks Embarq! Whatever you did.

Just curious, what is your latency or total hop time at the point where your traffic exits SprintLink? That's probably 5 or 6 hops out from you.

My understanding is that it is a setting in the DSLAM that an Embarq tech can change for you if you ask nicely. If you don't have fast-path then the regular setting is "interleaved" which adds several mS to your latency but makes your connection more resilient to noise on the copper loop portion of your circuit. There is no charge for fast-path and there doesn't seem to be an official way to order it. Once set to fast it can get changed back to interleaved without anyone notifying you. If you have a long copper loop or noise on your loop fast-path can make your DSL service worse, causing sync issues and long retrains.

well, just ran a speed test, latency was "ok"70ms but speeds are down. Are they ever going to fix this?

What has your latency been like during this past week? Starting last Thursday things really improved, until last evening between 10:30 and 11:00. My first Embarq hop was around 13ms-15ms, and was GREAT for nearly a week. Now it is back to 33ms and I'm hating it. Remoting into work seemed much more responsive as was online gaming with the lower latency.

Well it's been 5 days and still around 33ms to my first Embarq hop. What got changed on 03/13/08 and changed back on 3/19/08? I want it back to the 13ms-15ms first Embarq hop. There are others in Lapel that also noticed this and we want it fixed.

well looking at your test I never have latency numbers that low, mine are always over 70 or 80 and my speeds are not the 5 meg package I'm paying for, with my dsl, and phone bill I'm paying Embarq $100 a month...this has to stop

this is results from a flash test just ran to chicago, should be 5000 down and 768 up...not even close and latency was close to 90

Pull up a command prompt and do 'tracert google.com' It is probably your first Embarq hop causing the higher latency.

Please note: I only saw the really good latency from 3/13/08-3/19/08. I had saved a few screen captures, and that is what I posted, as proof it can be better.

Comparing the routes, looks like ip addresses of hops are pretty much the same. So it must have been a config setting on Embarq's end or maybe they had temporarily hooked up the Stinger DSLAM for testing. The last I knew, a new Stinger had just been powered up setting waiting to be connected at our CO for well over a year

Can an Embarq tech give us some info on what was changed that only lasted for near a week, and if we can look forward to seeing those lower latency hops here soon?

My speed is also up and down. Sometimes so low that dial up is faster. I'm in Bargersville.

I am now having problems with X box live, I fail my MTU test everytime I run a test on x box live, I have checked my router settings and pc settings and have no idea whats causing the problem..just that my MTU test fails.

It also seems that our service is out this morning, mabye after the storms last night? has anyone reported it? I'm going to call this morning on my way to a meeting....this is getting so old. I wish Insight or comcast would move into lapel, I'm going to call embarq again and let them know how unhappy I am with their service, as of last night my upload speed was 265, should be 768.....

Log in to your router and make sure that your MTU is AT LEAST 1364. Anything less and your connection will fail as Xbox Live requires a minimum of 1364. You can test your MTU size by opening a command prompt and typing ping www.google.com -f -l xxxx where xxxx is the MTU size. If you receive the message "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set," then that size MTU is not accepted on the network and needs to be fragmented further.

The MTU in my router is set for 1492, I can still play on live but it fails the test, so its not working like its supposed to and I just cant live with that.

Called Embarq today and they informed me there is still an open ticket in our area for speed and latency issues, I said this has been going on for 2 months is it ever going to be fixed, we're working on it.....

I am not an expert on computers or networking but I did d/l the TCP optimizer, its set at 1492 and so is my router I cant understand why I keep have MTU problems via x box live

Is it possible that the problem with our Embarq service is whats causing my MTU problems? I'm at a loss on what to do or how to fix it, i tried running the google ping test and got down to 1442 and kept getting fragmented packets and server time outs...
