RadioOp : Well we finally had enough here in Indiana. After the last few weeks of having extremely slow days, and an entire day of NO service, we have officially dumped Embarq. We were still under contract, but the boss said he did not care what it cost get us off this crappy internet connection. Paid the $200 to cancel and I have signed up with Comcast Business. Hopefully they will be better that this. I am getting 16 MB down/2 MB up package with Comcast for the same price I was paying Embarq for 5MB package. Man, it is sure FAST!!! Includes a block of static IP's too!

So long Embarq. I still use them at home, but that may also be short lived.

Good luck to the rest of you who do not have alternatives!

RadioOp

SLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

We, and several others, are businesses. This is just completely unacceptable. We are beginning the process of moving away from Embarq, fortunately we have an alternative, cost might be higher, but I bet it works all of the time, not just some of the time. You bet your a$$ I will tell everyone on Embarq to dump it if they want it work.

on phone with them now, they have no clue, say everything works fine...blah blah blah...SICK OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Embarq, if you read this you better get your act together. Next step is for governemnt intervention. Just ask Ameritech/SBC about how that goes. Their service was so bad that the state of Indiana put them on notice and required all kinds of crap from them...helped the customers, but we all know what happened to Ameritech...

So slow I can't even hardly get a post here...Jeez....

If you don't have fast-path then the regular setting is "interleaved" which adds several mS to your latency but makes your connection more resilient to noise on the copper loop portion of your circuit. There is no charge for fast-path and there doesn't seem to be an official way to order it. Once set to fast it can get changed back to interleaved without anyone notifying you. If you have a long copper loop or noise on your loop fast-path can make your DSL service worse, causing sync issues and long retrains.

»/faq/2684

Any east-coast Embarq customer with a half-decent copper loop is going to get a near-perfect measurement. The recurring problems have already been clearly documented to be at the hand-off between Embarq and Sprintlink. It sucks paying for a 10M circuit that only gets 1.5M to anywhere outside of Embarq's network between 3PM and 11PM. Of course I always get a near perfect 10M connection to Embarq's test FTP server, which DOESN'T GO THROUGH THE CONGESTED HANDOFF to the rest of the Internet.

This a pretty good explanation:
»Come on EMBARQ: Unacceptable Latency

I used to do that with Verizon... same shit, first rep is always pretty useless, can't make decisions, or answer questions, but the second , or supervisors and usually very helpful. I feel that would be the case here too. A little more info and people wouldn't be so upset. Just my $0.02

I do have a few lost packets.. and I wonder if this is between my modem and router? The ICMP responses don't reflect the severity of the packet loss going on. It might as well be a 5k+ ping (worse than satellite) in software where response time matters and only has ~4.2 kb/s of bandwidth at the moment (worse than dialup).
syoder : You guys in Lapel might have a different issue between your DSLAM and the RedBack. Your traceroutes show high latency on the first hop. If your router (not your PC) shows 0% in and out usage during your traceroute then you can pretty safely conclude the problem is with Embarq and not due to your link being congested. As I recall all of our traffic goes to Roachdale, IN where it's handed off to Sprintlink. Perhaps the problem is at Roachdale which is close enough to you guys to be your first hop.

The rest of us have had a problem with latency occuring between routers 2 hops into the network.

It got a lot better Monday afternoon and I actually saw latency of 85 ms in WoW for a little bit Monday evening whereas it's normally 180-250 ms.
Maxo : Sorry, I just looked at the screen shot you posted. Because you are behind a router, your first hop is the router. The second is between you and your POP, which is after your local CO. For example, I am in Tallahassee, but my POP is in Orlando, as is all of Florida.
If there was a problem at your local office then it would show on the POP ping. It could be network congestion in your area or an oversold office.
If there where problems with your physical connection, such as poopy wires, or whatever, then it would more than likely show up as packet loss when you run an extended ping.
--
"Padre, nobody said war was fun now bowl!" - Sherman T Potter

»maxolasersquad.com/

»maxolasersquad.com/network/ My DSL Network Guide

»myspace.com/mlsquad

I use my connection for remoting into work and online gaming, but not at the same time. Trust me, I can tell when there is a problem. It is not on my end unless it's the line coming from the pole to the house. I swapped out routers and modems and it does not matter. Same thing. If it were on my end, why would my neighbor's be like that also? He's going through a different gateway. I have a static ip he has a dynamic.
