 | Toshiba just about ready to throw the towel in on hd dvd? »www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/con···c25aa58d
Not surprising if true. Just too many hot & heavy blows against hd dvd since the beginning of the year. Even if this article is premature, even the most ardent hd dvd supporter has to see that whether it's a few weeks from now or a few months from now, Toshiba's surrender/defeat is inevitable. |

Wal-Mart puts stake through HD DVD's heart »www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9873029-7.html
"Things have gone from bad to worse for HD DVD in the space of one week.
Wal-Mart announced Friday morning that it, too, has chosen a side in the battle for high-definition video supremacy: by June it will only stock Blu-ray Disc players."
...
"Wrote Susan Chronister of Wal-Mart: "By June Wal-Mart will only be carrying Blu-ray movies and hardware machines, and of course standard-def movies, DVD players, and up-convert players."
"So," she continues, not mincing words, "if you bought the HD (DVD) player like me, I'd retire it to the bedroom, kid's playroom, or give it to your parents to play their John Wayne standard-def movies, and make space for a BD player...""

CIrcuit City doesnt have to flip at all, with just Walmart alone being a BRD backer it is a major blow(especially when you consider lots of people only shop at their local walmart for things like movies). -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

 | reply to DarnellP I expect Paramount (which owns Dreamworks), Dreamworks Animation, Universal, and the others will jump ship really soon.
With Toshiba not making HD DVD players, there's no one really building the players. Since the beginning, I knew Blu-ray had the edge, this was a major reason. The PS3 helped a lot too.
I read on digg that both camps were trying to reach an agreement years ago, but someone told the HD DVD camp to go it alone. I'm thinking this could be Microsoft. Anyone read the theory? It would make sense. Microsoft wanted this battle, so they could perfect their download service.
I read what HD DVD fans say, and some (or a lot of them) don't understand the technology. Like one person said that Blu-ray won't win until it could read DVDs. But it can! It seems like they're not well educated on technology. The people who claim Blu-ray is the next Betamax most likely bought the next Betamax, HD DVD. If you see the full picture, Blu-ray is NOTHING like Betamax.
Sony was smart to include Blu-ray with PS3. The price was increased, but first adopters will buy it still, and the most hardcore gamers will buy it. I read that Sony didn't start building the PS3 units until like September or October, for a November 2006 release. If they started sooner, I'm sure the engineers would've found ways to cut the components, lowering the costs. Plus, the PS3 released at a time when there was a shortage of blue laser diodes. Right when that shortage ended, about $70 cut on the component. With these 2 things, we could've saw the 20GB PS3 for $399, and 60GB for $499. No matter what, Sony was looking ahead, and Blu-ray will win because of that. |
