I read on digg that both camps were trying to reach an agreement years ago, but someone told the HD DVD camp to go it alone. Yes at one time the HD-DVD and blu-ray group tried to get together like they did for DVD. There was almost a format for for that technology too. They were smart enough to avoid that war. Both took a risk starting a war and HD-DVD lost. Blu-ray sort of loss too because this format could have been out there more and selling more already and the joining of forces would have led to faster advances and lower prices sooner.
I read what HD DVD fans say, and some (or a lot of them) don't understand the technology. The people who claim Blu-ray is the next Betamax most likely bought the next Betamax, HD DVD. If you see the full picture, Blu-ray is NOTHING like Betamax. If they knew their history betamax was equal to or better than VHS. They act like it was junk because it was made by Sony.
Sony was smart to include Blu-ray with PS3
I've been trying to tell people that for awhile now. I still see HD-DVD fanboys on other forums telling me how Sony was still stupid because they loss millions of $$$ on the PS3. Well yes initially, but unlike HD-DVD Sony will make up for that many times over in revenue from blu-ray movies. Also until 6 months ago the PS2 was the #1 selling console in the US and until last month was #2. I'm quite sure Sony makes a nice profit from the on the 200,000+ PS2s they sell per month for $130. Also from movies like Spiderman 3 that made $1 billion just in theaters worldwide. So it's not like Sony had all it's eggs in one basket unlike Toshiba.
If MS really wanted to support HD-DVD they would held off the XBOX 360 for 6-8 months and added in a HD-DVD player. The outcome of this war may have been different. And MS maybe would have had a chance to fix the issues with the RRoD BEFORE the 360 came to market. Considering that MS now rents HD downloads of movies that are available in both formats on XBL and took a full MONTH after the Warner announcement to drop it's price on it's HD-DVD add-on( kind of like the USSR declaring war on Japan 2 days after we drop the nukes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki )I think we know MS never really gave 2 shits about HD-DVD. |

TOKYO -- Toshiba Corp. is highly likely to pull out of the HD DVD business early this week, people familiar with the situation said, marking the end of an intense battle over next-generation formats against Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray technology.
Since Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. decided last month to support Blu-ray exclusively, sales of Blu-ray players and movies have started to gain momentum, leaving Toshiba to consider its options.
Recent announcements by major retailers like Best Buy Co. Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to support Blu-ray helped tip the scale, the people familiar with the situation said. |

IF "blue ray" becomes the new format for movies,
Questions(s)
1, Will all the local,Nat'l(cable/satellite stations) have to switch their formats also?
(like from SD to HD,now to blue ray)
If (most of us have) classic or favorite VHS or Dvd movies,(either in SD or HD)
2,Will we have tobuy another pcs of equipment/player-burner to play/record these new version movies.
3,Do you thing Sir, that eventually there will be a machine that will play bith formats?
(like VHS & DVD's)

Cable and Sat TV will continue delivering what they are and eventually(hopfully) increase the quality of their offerings.
Blu-ray is the current leader in Picture Quality.
HDTV is currentlt at 1080i(interlaced) - screen draws half of the picture and then draws the second half.
1080p(progressive) draws the picture all in one pass.
Currently, PQ from the various HDTV sources goes like this:
Sat - Cable - OTA - Blu-ray.
#2 Yes. To play a Blu-ray Disc, you will need a Blu-ray player or a Blu-ray drive for your computer.
The Blu-ray drive for the computer will also need HDCP compliant hardware along side of it to display the 1080p image.
The Blu-ray movies can be ripped and converted, but you lose quality if you re-encode it smaller to fit on DVDs
The movies are 19-45GB in size.
#3 Which formats? HD DVD is getting dropped.
*ALL* Blu-ray players and drives will play DVDs fine!

All the ad's I have seen for DVD releases always say available on DVD, HD and Blu-ray.
Of course they are dropping the HD part now.

"Japanese news site Nikkei.net has just announced that Toshiba's plan is to immediately stop manufacturing all HD-DVD products (both players and recorders), and to stop selling them at end of March. The official announcement will happen at the press conference set for 5 PM Tokyo time. We'll be back with Toshiba's official statement as soon as it comes in."

They do broadcast in HD. Blu-ray just describes the laser that reads the disc. There is no disc to read for the broadcatsers to broadcast in HD. Jeez.
B) You can't watch HD on a VHS tape. VHS isn't even DVD quality. Also no movies have been put out in VHS format for 4 years now.
C) blu-ray is HD. Jeez Louise.

All it is, is that OTA( that stands for Over The Air ) signals are no longer going to be broadcast in analog they are going to be broadcast in digital only. That doesn't mean HD. So no you don't need a HDTV to watch digital OTA signals. You do however need a Tv that has a digital tuner or get a digital converter box othewise you won't see crap with your rabbit ears. of course as I said none of this has anyhting to do with the HD-DVD vs blu-ray war.
