1 edit | New firmware out for Actiontec GT701-WG Qwest has finally released the QW06 firmware for the Actiontec GT701-WG. Before it was only released for the GT701-R before but now it's out for the WG.

Nampa, ID | Probably the same as the GT701R firmware.
Changes:
-PPPoE by default
-Configuring Quick Setup GUI will now set PPPoE
-Advanced Setup GUI has been revised to default to PPPoE
-Auto detect has been disabled
-PPP User Name/Password: saved when switching from PPPoA to PPPoE or vice
versa
Fixes:
-Modem Lock-Up
-Domain Name Broadcasting disabled
-Remote Management with Unnumbered Mode set
-Total Bytes Sent and Received on WAN Interface

| Drat... I was hoping in vain for SNMP. 
I dont know if what I see periodically is this 'modem lockup' or not. Periodically I am unable to open new connections to the internet. Established connections and streams keep going fine, but new connection attempts fail. It seems to be usage dependent, and sometimes takes weeks or even months to fail out. Reboot always cures the problem.
Otherwise, since I am using PPPoA, I might as well keep the old QW03 that I'm running now. |

I noticed that you now get a record of the number of re-trains, which may be good information if you are having connection problems. |

GUI changes:
*Welcome Screen Removal
*PPP Password Encryption:
1. Input PPP Password thru Quick Setup or Advanced Setup
2. During the initial input, the PPP Password will display in clear text
3. After the Apply button is selected and you are returned back to the screen where you inputted the PPP Password the PPP Password will show as encrypted.
*Masked the PPP Password in Quick Setup.
*Added Firewall Status Page.
*Added Modem Utilization Status page.
*Added modem model number to General Status page.
*Added ability to change Remote Management Port.
*Added Time Zone GUI page to the Utilities section.
*Added Retrain Counter / Time to the WAN Status Page.
*Type "home" to access "192.168.0.1" interface.
*Added Trace Route functionality to »192.168.0.1/support/utilities
*Disabled modem DNS Caching ability to turn ON DNS cache was also added to »192.168.0.1/support/utilities

I am using PPPoA and i upgraded to the new firmware.. and to me it seems to be working really well... I was having lost connection problems for atleast 2 months.. now that i upgraded the firmware it stays connected now..  |

Successfully upgraded to the QW06 this afternoon, and so far everything looks fine.
But if I try those support/utilities links, it jumps to ../html/oampingtest.html then promptly hangs the web interface to the modem, and generates a pile of webcm: Timeout on responce errors in /var/log/messages and a blank page.
Restarting thttpd does no good. Have to reboot the modem to get the web interface back.
At least I figured out how to automatically sniff my current IP address without prodding an external website.

| I dont know how -in depth- my knowledge is, I certainly wouldnt consider myself an expert.
I am a linux user, and the GT701 runs uClinux. So once you log into the modem via telnet, the base commands and directory structure are very familiar.
The shell in the GT701 runs a stripped down version of BusyBox for command line commands.

set setvar shift times trap true type ulimit umask unset wait And some additional commands in the binary directory that also point back to BusyBox, but dont appear in the 'help'

The rest has been alot of digging around inside various directories with alot of "Aha, thats how they do it!" moments. 
I dont have any clue as to how I would go about compiling new code to stick into the modem, though I have seen a few web pages that explain how flash them with custom firmware. |

I have the same problem, shortly after re-booting, the web interface slows WAY down. The new features may not be worth the hastle. |
