Where is the bandwidth coming from in the remaining 65%?

50-60 HD channels is GREAT! It's about time Comcast publically announces plans to increase HD channel capacity. We've already heard it enough from Cox, Charter, Verizon, DirecTV, Dish Network, etc...

One thing that questions me, is where are they getting the bandwidth?

If only 15% of the systems will have SDV functioning by years end, and then 20% are doing major analog bandwidth reclamation, what happens to the other 65% of Comcast's footprint?

I know my area has been very slow to add HD. Comcast in general focused heavily on CDV last year. Let's hope this year is a huge focus back on their main product... digital TV.

My system will be adding 8 HD channels starting on 2/17. That will bring us up to 30 total HD channels. Rumor has it that every quarter they will add a group of 6-10 new HD's. If they add 8 HD's in Q2, then 8 more in Q3 and finally 8 more in Q4, we would be up to 54 HD channels. Sounds about right on target.

The bandwidth comes from not actually doing the upgrade in more than two thirds of their footprint. They've learned a lot from the FCC: It seems that as long as you have one system actually running what you advertise you can claim it for your entire operation. It works for HSI and I'm sure it will work for their imitation HD. Quite clever, those marketing lawyers.

They get forgotten about like my area. I still only have 13HD channels, not including USA/FX/A&E/History/Discovery/Spike/Sci-Fi. I would switch to a dish if I could put one up. :|

In some areas it has to do with the actual plant. In Central PA's Comcast area because of the various aquisitions which created the region, while MOST of the systems are running with 750mhz of frequency, there are still several areas with only 550mhz available on their plant.

Unfortunately because those 550 plants have less bandwidth to play with currently, they sometimes don't get all the new channels which are launching in other parts of the region. Unfortunately I don't currently know the plans on when/if they are gonna upgrade those systems.

An easy way to tell if you are on a 550 plant or 750 plant within Central Pa.... I believe pretty much all the 750's currently have VoD, while the 550's I think are still without.

Yeah in Reading we are built to 750 MHz. They are using Scientific Atlanta System III RF line gear and nodes.

Our highest channel is 118 (759 MHz) which is a 256QAM carrying the GAME (MLB/NHL) channels.

I think they built Lebanon, Pottsville and Reading around the same time using the same RF gear.
