| reply to VelcomJoe Yep, looks like BD is going to win over HD-DVD.
But rememeber that HD-DVD was/is not BDs biggest competition. BDs biggest competition is SD-DVDs and upconvert DVD players. High definition DVDs will not be adopted by the masses until:
1. BD players become as cheap as DVD players (roughly $100 give or take $50) and/or the disks become as cheap (or close to it) as SD-DVDs (roughly $10 give or take $5)
OR
2. SD-DVDs are no longer available in stores.
That's why HD-DVD lost (is losing) to BD. The HD-DVD strategy was to be the cheapest and they forgot that SD-DVDs were cheaper still and in the fight to be the cheapest they lost. |

INMHO, the reason HD-DVD lost was the PS3. Now that the PS3 has overtaken(for one month) the sales of the 360, it just put to many BD players in peoples homes. That and only one maker of HD-DVD hardware (Toshiba). |

| Possibly, but I don't think that the vast majority of people that watch DVDs have game consoles. I, and many people my page, watch a lot of DVDs but I don't own one game console.
Now of course that theory might hold true for the type of people that buy BD movies. I would guess that they are younger and more into the latest greatest must have gadget and want the best performance. But for the rest of the population (ie the masses) I think it would be similar to PC sales. The vast majority of PC sales are the cheaper easy to buy in store PCs. I would guess that the same people that buy top of the line PCs or build their own, are the same people that are buying BD.
So that's why I think that what killed HD-DVD was the fact that the people that are buying hidef DVDs right right now don't care about price. They want the best or, in the case of gamers, what plays on their console. But that is not the masses. The masses have not yet jumped aboard. So HD-DVD was appealing to group of people that weren't buying either yet. |

| BD sales will increase(multiply?) as more people get HDTVs in the first place.
PLUS, when people get 1080p HDTVs to take advantage of the available PQ - more people will want the best available source to feed their new sets.
This whole WAR is... scaring(?) people from adopting HD disc players(either).

| reply to pepperxn BluRay had better drop their hardware prices *fast* or they'll "fail" (DVD will continue to reign) too. Of course, with no competition they have little incentive to do so.
At this point, if a BD player were available for $150 or less, I'd jump in. |

Actually quite the opposite. Now that there is a winner companies can focus and fighting each other for customers. There is more than ONE maker of blu-ray players. Now that store don't have to stock two formats and not knowing which one will win and thus not stocking much of each and thus not promoting either format, they can now concentrate on blu-ray. Do you think Best Buy, Wal-Mart etc aren't going to compete for customers? Profits margins for DVDs suck. The sooner blu-ray takes hold the better for them. So it's in their best interest to see blu-ray takes off so they can dump DVD.
At this point, if a BD player were available for $150 or less, I'd jump in. by x-mas of this year. quote me. |

1 edit | reply to Hall This laptop, at time of manufacture, the optical drive was valued at $1000.00. That was in May 2006.
Now, OEM builders are getting them for around $350.00 and they are faster.
Set Top players will be dropping faster than ever now.
I would guess at this Fall/Christmas Season, as well. on way cheaper players. -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |

| STB players were $999... now you can get one for $399(Best Buy)
Seeing as more volume usually means lower prices... prices will start dropping.

| reply to pepperxn well hey before VHS was killed they had VCRs for like 15bucks, so once you get all the hardware vendors only making DVD and Blu-Ray prices should come down.
upside to the new HD optical formats is they read DVDs so i think once Blu-Ray tech gets cheap enough the normal DVD player will just disappear as the BD-Rom can read your old library as well. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

| reply to dadkins said by dadkins : Only game in town, know what I mean? Kinda like the average cable company, eh ? When they're the only game in town, they can charge what they want. Same applies to *anything*, of course, grocery store, gas station, etc. In this scenario, as with only BD existing, there's no competition, hence no incentive to lower prices. I do hope the BD consortium proves basic economics wrong though !
I'll repeat what I said earlier: If the players remain in the price range they're at now or don't drop a LOT and drop SOON, BD will "lose" to DVD also. They may still exist, but studios will slowly stop making titles available just like with Betamax and LaserDisc. |
