HOUSTON -- A newborn who police say was delivered in the bathroom of a hospital emergency room and concealed in a trash can is brain dead, the mother's lawyer said.
The infant's 29-year-old mother, Genny Granados, remained jailed Friday on a charge of injury to a child.
Her attorney, Elihu H. Dodier, said Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital officials indicated the baby boy has no brain activity.
"We're hoping that the child will be okay," Dodier said. "But it doesn't look good."
The child has been on life support since being discovered Saturday night at Southwest Memorial Hermann Hospital by a custodian. The child didn't have a pulse but was revived by doctors.
"She has such little respect for human life that she tells no one, to my knowledge, that she was pregnant. She goes to the hospital, has a pair of scissors in her hand, and cuts her own umbilical cord and looks at her baby and throws it in the trash," said prosecutor Kelli Johnson.
A judge raised bail for Granados from $30,000 to $50,000 on Thursday. If she is released on bond, Granados can only see her two other children -- ages 2 and 10 -- under supervision.
Granados, a legal resident originally from El Salvador, has lived with the father of her two-year-old son for the past five years.
The man, Alfredo Navarro, said he did not know Granados was pregnant and doesn't think he is the father of the newborn.

it is a "common" culture,(being polite) gap, people come here from other countries,with their cultures,& practice's,
(what is alright to do in their own country,and one one cares or thinks twice about saying anything ) then they come here, and expect to be able to do the same thing.
Its like we go in to a fast food-drivethru & say let me have a hamberger fries & a coke,
no problem,,,
go over to INDIA & ask for the same thing, & see what happens.
