I think it is important to distinguish between the two. Both are real phenomenon. Both vary according to sat/transponder. And nobody actually knows why #2 happens at all. :-)
Just to complete the test.

So whats the big surprise?? Nothing nefarious here. During peak time useage when everyone is on their system the speed go's down. It keeps the system from crashing. Unfortunately were on a shared bandwidth system and unless you have very deep pockets that is the price you pay for having any satellite internet whatsoever.
I'll have to disagree with you. What we're talking about is a distinct dropoff in speed at 4pm, then an immediate ramp up at midnight. Look at this screenshot above.

My speeds have returned to normal for the time being, but I believe you can see from the screenshot what has been reported by others.

Wow... that isn't pretty. Seems like you do have a pretty steady degradation of service.

Mine is a sudden drop off:

I called executive customer service today. The guy I spoke with tried to suggest it was network congestion. I said (nicely), "com'on every day exactly at 4pm ending exactly at 12am? That doesn't make sense." So, I have an actual person to work with, so hope that I get to the same place as tomcatt1 and vtblues. Here's hoping anyway!

Well I made a change a few mins ago I called and said I was the son of the US President YEAH RIGHT! Really I called and changed my plan to proplus Wanted to know if it was anywhere close to the plan speed and found out the dl is super the up load is a ittle low but heck with up load I just can not afford 80 bucks a month so after a week I will go back to the home plan I started with and just hang with it and hope something changes. right before I switched I checked my speed on the pro plan and it was 46kbps down and 22kbps down that was around 330pm eastern time so I can not wait to see what this will do first thing in the morning.

Wait! Let me get this straight. You switched plans today and you saw your performance go dramatically up? Which plan did you switch from and which plan did you switch to?

Do they switch gateways or something when you switch plans? Any one know?

Just to be clear. I am on the Pro Plan, and I am having a problem. So I am wondering if your performance improved not because you upgraded, but rather something changed because of the fact of changing plans. That would be interesting!

The fact of the matter is that if they advertise speeds, that is what it should be, again this is just another company that tries to make more money with less and over populates their signals. They have to throttle it down or it would crash. Also if you will read the fine print on your contract, somewhere it should say that if u download in excess of 700mb a month you connection will be throttled back to a speed less than dial up . This is the worst possible means for internet, I'm speaking to you from exp. I canceled my contract short and payed the fee, just so I didnt have to put up with their shit. Unless it is the ONLY way to do internet in your area, I don't recommend it.

I'd like to see you provide proof of this.

I wish I still had my contract but it is there, I'm not sure of the exact number you have to download to get throttled back but I will try to find it for you. My brother was the one who first pointed this out to me I'll talk to him and get back to ya.

Yes, switching plans will generally (perhaps, always) result in being switched to a different gateway. That new gateway might be more crowded than the old one, or it might be less crowded.

yep. I have the 90% decrease too. At 11:58 I downloaded a file at 10.5KBPS. at 12:01 I downloaded a file at 120KBPS.
Has anyone figured out a solution to this yet?

Yes I swithched plans went from pro to pro plus 69.99 to 79.99 And yes everything went up speed, signal, and price.

Now I did not just call and ask nice, I kinda talk short to some of these people only if they make the first move.
I just am not putting up with them They know what they are doing and thats making money these people do not care about you and I only about the $.

I wished I could stay on this plan But I just can not see paying 80 bucks a month I am going to have to soon go back to my old home plan Just wished I could ge back on the first transponder and gateway I was on the first time But I was told that is for firt time customers .
But doubt that will ever happen But again yes MY speeds went up last test in did and this is close speeds all day I will have to test more in the peak to show you. Also my signal strength has been going up a number or so the past few days a week when I moved to this plan it was 68-70 went to 70-73 now today 75-78 and the dish has not been touched and no strong winds matter of fact its been bad weather here the last 3 days and still not all that right now I wonder when this weather clears is it going to get even better.

Boy, I wish I was getting the speed you folks are. Since 2/21/08 I have been getting evening speeds of a high of 84 down/114 up to (usually) 10 d/14 u. I have dropped as low as 5 d/17 u. After spending several hours over a couple of nights with their so-called level 1 and 2 tech support, I got the "we don't guarantee bandwidth" excuse. And when I was asked to be transferred to billing to get some kind of adjustment on my bill, they told me they could only give me a 1 day "courtesy credit". When I asked the guy for the number of the corporate office, I was told they didn't have it. Hmmm maybe the NSA or whoever shot down the wrong satellite!!!! Maybe it's time to go back to NetZero. I can get an aircard for $59.00 a month and get better bandwidth.

I go straight to executive customer care these days.

- I am still experience low speeds during prime time.

- They offered to repoint my dish to a different sat at no cost. But no guarantee that it won't slow down at some point.

- Switching to another plan may help because one will be on a different gateway.

Still deciding what I am going to do.

So far I'm glad I took them up on the repoint offer they made me. While I'm not getting four digit downloads after getting two digit downloads these are fine.
