| I must be a complete idiot because for the life of me I cant get vod or widgets to work. The only thing that I have succeeded in doing is having my router of choice pull an ip from verizon. I can surf the net and things but everything else fails. Set-top boxes cant get an ip, vod/widgets do not work. I have tried almost every post/solution to this but cant get it to all work together. I am at a lose. I think part of my problem is the bridge setups. I use smoothwall as my fw/router which has two nics one WAN and one private/lan (192.168.1.0) address. I can't change this because I have to many things configured (AD/dns/dhcp/ and a plethra of other things). I would even pay someone to get my vod/widgets working correctly. | |

| Re: Make your actiontec a bridge with VOD working with REV D Hey BKJ, Having similar pains as you are; all IP setups and cabling are according to the guides, STB gets an IP (sometimes 192.168.1.2, sometimes 192.168.100.1) but VoD and Widgets are a no go. I heard somewhere that the STBs need a 192.168.100.1 address to work properly. I dont know why that would be requirement if all they have to do is to do a DNS query for the head-end servers and then establish a silly IP connection | |

| BKJ, your fw with two nics should still work. Honestly, I use a server as my fw/router with a bridged router on the back side of it. It is essentially the same as what you have. Just plug the ethernet cable from your actiontec into your WAN nic of your fw, then do the opposite, ethernet cable from your fw to the actiontec wan port.
You can also try changing your home/network DHCP server in the actiontec to a DHCP relay so that it does not conflict with your smoothwall.
Do you have a yahoo messenger account? I can talk to you on there and help you out.

| OK Here is a quick explanation for the DHCP Relay.
The Relay expands your personal FW/Router's DHCP range to the STB's. Basically the relay sends the requests for IP's from the STB's to your personal router and then assigns the ips from the router to the STB's. This way all of them will be on the same network range. It's easier than setting them up on a separate network. I've tried separating them, but the widgets and VOD stop working, so it's pointless.

HOWEVER, this config only impacts QoS on your local LAN. WAN QoS is handled by Verizon to support multiple HD streams by dynamically adjusting throughput/caps on your line. The biggest problem you may face with this setup is that your 3rd party router might not have the WAN throughput to support the amount of traffic that can be generated.

What is the advantage of the setup you are describing compared to simply running a second router off the actiontec router by plugging the 2nd router with a cat5 cable into one of the actiontac's lan ports?

JaySco The actiontec will get the internet from the Ethernet Wan port, which is plugged into the router of your choice. Your router receives an external IP fromVerizon through the bridge we created on the actiontec.
I made this pic to show you how it works

I hope this helps everyone get an idea of how it's setup.

I decided that it's easier NOT to fight Verizon, and just put a new Dlink DIR-655 as the EDGE router and hung the Actiontec on the back as you and others have said when a user has the ETHERNET port turned ON by Verizon like I have.
I left the Actiontec on it's default x.x.1.1 and put the DIR-655 on x.x.0.1
Since the DIR-655 has GIG ports and all my house switches are on GIG speed too, it all works much better

The issue is the guide itself. It is up and running and functional but for some reason if I try to access the widgets, it gives me an error that it cannot connect to the server. Worse yet if I have power cycle the stb's that is the end of the guides. Has anybody run into this?

| I'm not sure what suggestions have been included but you really don't need to go through all these steps.
All I did on my home network is as follows and I get VOD on all my STBs in my house.
INTERNET NETGEAR The Netgear is connected to the internet hrough the WAN port.
NETGEAR ACTIONTEC Ethernet#1 is connected to the Ethernet#1 on the Vz ActionTec box.
ACTIONTEC COAX The Coax is connected to the Actiontec.
How this works is simple.
First I unhooked everything. Then I plugged in the Actiontec router and connected a PC to it. On the Actiontec I disabled DHCP and changed the routers internal IP address to 192.168.1.254
I then wired the routers together as described above. Again these routers are connected to each other through their respective ethernet ports. They are not connected to each other using the WAN ports as that would create a subnet which I've done but seems overly unnecessary in this case.
Finally I connected the Ethernet coming from the ONT directly into the NETGEAR's WAN port.
Why this works: With nothing connected to the WAN port and with DHCP turned off on the Actiontec it's no longer a router but a HUB. Traffic simply flows from one box to the other.
The NETGEAR's IP is 192.168.1.1 it has DHCP on. The STB's when they connect seek and IP address. They send out the request which travels through the Actiontec to the NETGEAR. They get their IPs and DNS information from the NETGEAR. The Actiontec at this point is just simply a network bridge/hub. The bridged options were installed by default from Vz.

Not sure if you have any more suggestions because I cannot get this to work for the life of me. I get the internet and I get the guide great but the VOD still a no go. I checked the bridge setup on step 15 of the guide and as you stated it only had the one IP address of 192.168.2.1. I went ahead and removed the bridge and recreated it several times and still nothing. I did notice that when I removed the bridge all the STB's showed up in the network status page. Once I recreate the bridge they go away. At this point the only thing I can think about is the 2nd router being the problem. Thanks for your help.

I am trying and trying. My STB has an IP. I see the STB in the DHCP client table on my DD-WRT. No guide, widget, etc.
Let me know what you did. My actiontec still has 192.168.1.1 reserved so my dd-wrt is 192.168.1.23, did you do something similar?
On the actiontec the set-tops appear as ethernets not coax, is that how yours is?
Can you supply some valid screen shots from the actiontec?
And here is the real stupid question, how do I know if I have revision D? I have a big black actiontec box.

2. Make sure your broadband connection bridge has two ip's listed (see my pics on page 4 of this thread). If it does not delete the bridge and recreate it. It should contain a 192.168.2.1 ip and the other one should be an ip in your LAN given out by your dhcp server.

| OK, Here I go. I hope the smart guys are still around, because I have a baffling problem that I hope you guys can help me with. I followed the OP and all the revisions along the way ( thanks to all that contributed ) and it worked great. I get VOD , guides ,and widgets. I have 2 actiontec MI424wr ver. A and 1 ver. C routers. All are bridged, almost plug n' play. If one goes bad all I have to do is release ip and replace bad router with another, and clone MAC to my linksys piggybacked router. I have a linksys wrt350n router and a wpc300n pcmcia wireless for my laptop. The problem is I can access my local network , wired PC, I can even print to a printer hooked to the wired PC. I can ping url's , but I CAN'T get to the internet! When I do an IPCONFIG /ALL on the laptop all looks good. Release IP, then renew IP, and ping url's all looks good! I borrowed a NIM 100 from a friend of mine to see if the problem is the laptop, the router , or for what ever reason, the bridging of the actiontec. As it turns out, I can get to the internet wirelessly with the actiontec reverted back to original for (VOD,guides ,etc. - sake )firmware ver.4.0.16.1.56.0.10.7 with wireless turned off, and nim 100 in place. But I don't know why the setup worked great, except for the wireless internet connection. The firmware version was @ 4.0.16.1.55.0.10.4.3 with auto updates blocked ( port 4567 ) when bridged.( As soon as I reset the actiontec, the router was updated with the latest update ver. 4.0.16.1.56.0.10.7 ) Can anybody help solve this? | |

I had configured the AT based on instructions available at that time using a VLAN bridged to my own firewall (IPCop), and it worked well until someone in my house turned off the ONT and somehow, I lost the config. I spent hours yesterday just trying to pass an IP from Verizon to my IPCop machine to no avail. Several hard resets of the AT and reboots of IPCop and still no IP I don't know whether the firmware in the AT changed or what the deal is, because I don't recall it being this difficult. I'm going to try the "turn off the AT for 2 hours" approach that someone mentioned. Maybe then I can get an IP? We'll see. I notice these instructions use the WAN port on the AT rather than setting up a VLAN on one of the LAN ports, so I wonder.. which is a better approach? Finally, is there a way to get back into the AT once this setup is done? The first thing I'm doing if I ever get this working again is backing up the config. I too tried this setup and could not get an IP to come to my 3rd party router. All of the other settings jive with the OP. I get the .2.1 ip and a local IP based on the 3rd party router (192.168.0.209). But no matter how many times I try to pull the IP it does not come. Am I missing something. This is really frustrating for DIYers and tweakers who like to use their own equiment and don't like to be shackled to the Actiontec. It's the one big "gotcha" with Verizon, even though I do think overall FIOS is better service than Comcast ever was for me (I used Comcast for years). I use my own router/firewall that I have customized for some time now and it includes a VPN & the ability to send magic packets to wake up machines on my LAN, to name a few things. I think there are a lot of others out there like me who have their reasons for not using the Actiontec, and I wish Verizon would realize this. And the whole thing about connecting through ethernet for VOD just seems like weird engineering on Verizon's part, IMO, but I'm no expert. 'Sorry for the vent..
Anyway, I found that I was able to get an IP, but every now and then I would lose my connection to both the internet and my IPCop router. I finally found that the culprit was the VOD connection to the WAN port of the AT. I noticed in my IPCop log that there were a bunch of DHCP connections by the AT to IPCop. This had the effect of killing my connection to IPCop from my LAN. Once I pulled the cable, all was well, but of course I lost VOD to my STB's. So, the bottom line is that I don't think this bridging setup works for everyone..
I'm going to try to set up a bridge with a VLAN to ethernet port 1, since that had worked for me before. And if I can't figure it out, my last resort is enabling ethernet on the ONT.. but I have to run cable to my garage to do that.

I did notice that when I reconnect my AT it takes a while to pull an IP again. Maybe I should just leave my router sitting and hope it will automatically pull one through.
I don't need to do any MAC cloning with this setup do I? I'm getting confused between the 3 or 4 different set ups on this board.

The first thing I'm doing if I ever get this working again is backing up the config. if you bridge the Actiontec, you have to disable DHCP. Whatever you connect to the Actiontec needs a fixed IP on the Actiontec's subnet. Then you'll get the connection for administering it.

| I don't know if this thread is still alive, but I just wanted to say I have this working.. sort of. I can get an IP from Verizon to my personal router, and I had VOD working, but the next day I lost connection to the internet from any machine on my LAN. Actually, I could not even access my router's admin page. After doing DHCP release/renew, the internet came back. But the bottom line is that the cable to the AT supplying the VOD feed is the culprit, because when I pull it, I have no problems, but when it's plugged in, I lose connection to the internet intermittently. VOD works intermittently as well.
My personal router's subnet is 192.168.2.0. Is this causing any conflicts? I'm getting confused by so many subnets between the AT and my own router. I may try changing my router's subnet and/or setting a static IP for the VOD devices, as someone suggested.
Thanx | |
