Re: Connecting Belkin F5D7230-4 in bridge mode?

said by More Fiber See Profile :

Why not just use the Actiontec as you wireless router? Are you having signal problems?
No that's not what I want to do. Here is the problem I am trying to solve. I have a ReplayTV in a neighboring room from where the Actiontec is located. It needs a wired connection. I have it hooked up to a Belkin router which had previously been bridged (wirelessly) into the Belkin that had the DSL connection. I want to do the same thing with the Actiontec -- let the Belkin connect wireless to it so it can support a local wired connection.

I will probably end up moving the Actiontec to where the ReplayTV is at some point but since I still have speed issues I would like to leave it alone for now (I had it installed where it is so the installer could have easy access issues to it). The wireless signal on the Actiontec is actually pretty good, that is not an issue.

Thanks.

So I currently am running a smoothwall comp (also acting as a DHCP server to an internal LAN) and would like my external Verizon IP to be fed to the external port on my Smoothwall. Is that possible? I've tried a few bridging methods on the internet (one on these forums by DaDragon) to no success. I also use the MI424WR modem/router. After following the instructions to a T, I still fail to pull an external IP on my Smoothwall box. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

There are a number of ways to run your own router. DaDragon See Profile's thread is appropriate only if you do not have FIOS TV.
See the following FAQ regarding different configurations for running your own router:

From your earlier post, I missed that you had two Belkins acting as a wireless bridge. Simply follow the instructions in the following FAQ to connect one of the Belkins to the Actiontec.

Thanks, but that seems to be talking about leaving my Belkin wired into the Actiontec, which is not what I want to do. Don't I need to change the WEP key on the Belkin to match what it was set to on the Axtiontec? Do I need to make the SSID's the same?

What you are trying to configure is called Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
The Actiontec does not support WDS.

Thanks. That does sound familiar from when I was bridging the Belkins to begin with. I guess I will be moving the Actiontec, although i could just do it temporarily for now since I only need the connection to download the program guide and that will last for 10 days or so.

Re: Make your actiontec a bridge with VOD working with REV D

Hi. First I want to thank everybody for all the great info in this post. Following Yubin's info I have bridged my AT to my DIR655 and gotten VOD and the guide working. I do have 1 question and 2 problems.

Question: My MacPro has a second ethernet port. Can I run a patch cable from that to the AT with a static ip in the AT's range so that I can configure it after power-downs without physically disconnecting from the DIR655?

Problem 1: I tested my speed when only the AT was hooked up and I was getting 19 down and 18 up (my plan is 20/20). Once I hooked up the DIR655 with the AT bridged I'm getting 19 down but only 9 up as reported by speedtest.net???

Problem 2: My DIR655's log is getting flooded with:
Dropped packet from 169.254.1.90 to 169.254.1.255 (IP protocol 17) as unable to create new session
My DIR655 is at the latest firmware, and I've tried hard resting everything, & resetting it up but I still get that message over & over. Not sure if this is connected to problem #1.

Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

Possibly. It would depend if you can set your browser to explicitly use that port and you would only be able to do so after resetting the Actiontec to factory defaults. Once the first of the two bridges has been established, the switch ports on the Actiontec are bridged to the WAN and you won't be able to connect to them.

I assume you've already seen the discussion of STBs and UDP broadcasts earlier in this thread starting here.

Those are broadcast UDP packets. They are from one or more of your STBs. The STBs send UDP broadcasts using APIPA addressing to communicate configuration information among themselves and with Media Manager PC software.

The "unable to create session" portion of the message implies the router is attempting to create a NAT table entry for a message that should never be routed. Since you have the latest firmware, I would suggest contacting D-Link support about the flood of messages. There is no reason your router should consider UDP broadcasts to be a problem.

same o'l problems

I hate having to repeat my problems on this post but this is getting a little tiring. I'm usually pretty good at troubleshooting but I'm at a loss here.

I 'had' bridge mode and guide on the STB working, but every so often (2-3 mo) i would lose my settings. I thought this was related to power outage so i got a UPS. this didn't fix anything as I was still having my internet drop out until i redid all the configuration. guide on the STB used to work and now it doesn't... identical settings (I saved the config file) too. this is just casual observation but it always seems that the internet goes out (or router loses configuration... which ever it is) before I wake up (6:30am pst?). that's just casual observation on my part.

i've got a coax to ethernet connection. i believe i'm using the 2nd to latest firmware. I'm not sure if the latest firmware is better or not... all I know is that I couldn't get it to work using the latest firmware and to save myself trouble I just kept using the one before the latest.

update: i may have spoken too soon. so it turns out when I went home just now I have internet connection again. A new IP as well. in previous cases the new router wouldn't pull an IP. I'm actually using a different router than before with tomato instead of ddwrt. i'm not sure what's going on and if my old router wasn't able to renew an ip or not. internet was down for 90 mins or so. I think i read somewhere that it takes about 2 hrs to renew an IP.

does anyone know how long these dynamic IP's last for?

The lease is 2 hours. They renew themselves half way through (1 hour) if nothing goes awry. When you go to wait out the expiration of the lease, it will fall somewhere between 1 and 2 hours.

Re: Make your actiontec a bridge with VOD working with REV D

Ok...

I went through all these steps and have my WRT54G w/ Tomato v1.25 as my main router. That works fine. All the machines I wire to and connect wirelessly to the WRT54G can get internet access perfectly fine.

Problem is that VOD/program info does NOT work because the STB's aren't getting IP's.

Why would that be?

This is the "double bridge" configuration.

Bridge 1 - Coax WAN to Ethernet WAN
cat5 cable from Actiontec port 1 to WRT54G WAN port.
Since you are getting internet off the WRT54G, this part appears to be working.

Bridge 2 - Ethernet LAN to Coax LAN
•Did you install the second cat5 cable from the WRT54G LAN port 1 to the Actiontec WAN port?
•In the properties for the Broadband Bridge, is DHCP relay set?

More Fiber, there is a reason why you are a god around these parts...

I forgot to run the second CAT5 cable from the WRT54G back to the MI424WR... Direction following ftw!

Thanks!

*EDIT*

The CON about the "double bridge" setup is that not all bridging info is saved in power is lost. What exactly are we talking about here? What will I have to re-do?

Also, is the only way for me to access the MI424WR's setup GUI to plug a machine directly into it and go to 192.168.1.1?

You will need to re-enable the second bridge.

If you are using the double bridge, I would suggest getting a small UPS (350VA) for the Actiontec so that the active configuration information is retained in the event of a power failure. If you want to go with a slightly larger UPS (550-750VA), you can power both the BBU(ONT) and the Actiontec and keep your internet connection up for several hours during a power failure.

As the instructions are written, you might not even get connected to it that way. The 4 switch ports on the Actiontec become a WAN switch and are not part of your LAN. There may be a away around that, but I haven't tested it.

Thanks.

Now I just need to figure out why my WRT54G (newest release of Tomato) doesn't want to play ball with my Acer Aspire One netbook. If gets an IP but I can't ping anything or open webpages yet every other machine and wireless laptop in my house works fine.

I don't think its the laptop because it worked fine on the WiFi network at my school AND Barnes&Noble today.

The connection repair utility in Win 7 says it can't communicate with the DNS server.

Very odd.

I've followed the guide as best I can, and I think I did everything right, yet I'm still having some trouble setting this up with my Apple Time Capsule. Everything seems right on the Actiontec config page, when when I start up my Time Capsule, I get the following error message:

»j.photos.cx/screen-303.png

At this point, I have no idea what to do. I'm still able to edit settings on the Time Capsule, but I really have no clue what they're supposed to be. The IP address listed on the Apple TC screenshot is not my IP at all, so that part is especially confusing.

The 169.254.x.x address on your router is a self-assigned APIPA address. That means your router is not able to reach a DHCP server.

This thread is the "double bridge" configuration, where your router becomes the primary router. The fact that you can't reach VZ's DHCP server indicates the first of the two bridges is not configured correctly.

You didn't provide any information about your FIOS installation.
•Do you have FIOS-TV?
•Do you have an Actiontec router, or Westell router?
•Do you have a coax connection from the VZ router to the ONT?
•Is there a reason you are trying to make the Time Capsule your primary router?

There are a number of other different ways to connect your own router. See the following FAQ:
