Re: Make your actiontec a bridge with VOD working with REV D

You didn't provide any information about your FIOS installation.
•Do you have FIOS-TV?
•Do you have an Actiontec router, or Westell router?
•Do you have a coax connection from the VZ router to the ONT?
•Is there a reason you are trying to make the Time Capsule your primary router?
Thanks for the quick reply.

1. I do not have FIOS-TV. I only have FIOS internet.
2. I have an Actiontec MI-424-WRv2
3. I have a coax connection from the ONT. I am aware that you can have Ethernet, but I didn't realize that at the time of installation.
4. I wanted to use the Time Capsule because I like 1) their configuration tools 2) the router features like print sharing etc and 3) I have a mac-only house and 4) I had the Time Capsule before I got FIOS, I'd like to actually use it.

You may want to try the instructions here:
»Re: MI424WR-GEN2 Rev E Configuration Thread

They were written specifically for the Rev. E Actiontec. Although very similar to the earlier models, there are some minor differences.
You can stop at "To Enable VOD, widgets, etc", since you do not have FIOS-TV.

If these instructions work for you, please post back indicating that you were successful.
Of course, if you have any issues, you can post back with those too.

NAT Error: No free NAT IP

This is what's in my Actiontec router log file whenever I start having Internet connectivity problems.

So it does seem like this setup is NOT bypassing the small NAT table problems like it's supposed to.

I'm convinced my setup is correct. I've doublechecked it a number of times.

I am a very heavy p2p user though.

Looks like I'm SOL until Actiontec decides to take their head out of their *** and fix the small NAT table problem with their router.

Sounds like at step 18, you have IP Address Distribution set to DHCP server, rather than DHCP Relay.

Actiontec did improve the NAT table situation with the Rev. E (GEN2) router, although still nowhere close to the Westell.

Nah. It's set to DHCP Relay.

I kinda figured it wasn't going to be that easy.

•I'm assuming your router is pulling the public WAN DHCP address (e.g. 72.x.x.x, etc). Correct?

•What is the LAN side subnet for your router?

•Is wireless in the Actiontec disabled?

•Are all PCs connected to your router?
i.e. Nothing connected to the Actiontec switch except the LAN-to-WAN cable.

•What subnet are the PCs and STBs being assigned?

The setup is 100% correct, and it's working as intended. I've checked, and doublechecked it.

However, a firmware upgrade on the Actiontec seems to have solved the problem. It's been 3 or 4 days since the firmware upgrade now and I haven't had to reboot the Actiontec once yet. Typically I have to do that twice a day (once when I get home from work...it craps out sometime during the day, and once sometime late evening when it craps out again after the reboot).

Fingers crossed.

Hey Dudes!!!

I'm coming back to FiOS in a matter of weeks!!! (I've been without it for 6 months and i'm having withdrawals)

I set this up last year and it was great. Anything changed since then? Did they fix the small nat table or have a better firmware update? Better yet, did they stop using the actiontec all together? I guess i'll find out in a few weeks...

FIOS customers in former GTE territories now receive the Westell 9100EM router. Although the Westell has the awkward GUI, it does indeed fix the NAT table. Search on "Westell" and "NAT".

Here's a post showing the large size of the NAT tableon the Westell:

Fios tv, internet and phone installed last week. Going out of my mind with wireless. I sit within 4 feet and I can't go wireless. Many calls to Verizon and I have to give up on any hope they'll be of any help.

Router is Actiontec MI424WR REV E with Coax MoCoa (not ethernet). I want to use Linksys wrt54g for pc wireless instead and keep Actiontech functional for TV. Lots of entries in this thread so I'm appealing for help to get a quick summary of what I should do. Will instructions on page 2 here from CookieMonsta work with the WRT54G? Any update to those instructions?

The related issue I have is that I've forgotten the Linksys pw so I've tried going back in to re-install that (tried late last night with limited success so must try again). I think what I need to do is go wired Actiontech to pc, wire Actiontec Lan to Linksys Internet; wire Linksys port (anyone between 1-4) to Actiontech Lan 1-4 so that Linksys is connected to internet...correct? Then disable the Network Connection so that the 192.168.1.1 site is ready to provide readings Based on the Linksys vs Actiontech? Install Linksys via install disc (new SSID name) then go 192.168.1.1 to change the Linksys ip to 192.168.2.1? Then follow instruction on page 2 of this thread?

All help is greatly appreciated and will prevent me from blowing my brains out in my effort to get rid of Actiontech for internet wireless.

Just to point it out, you can set up the Linksys via your web browser. After you reset it to factory defaults, you can visit »192.168.1.1 with the password of admin to set up everything you want in the Linksys. No need to run the CD

If all you need is to use the Linksys as a WAP, follow the instructions in this FAQ:
»Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »Can I use my wireless or an extra router along with the Verizon provided router?

Thanks Smith...the issue here is that when I go to 192.168.1.1, it reads the Actiontec router and not Linksys. That's why I'm getting stuck and unsure how to avoid that. I tried turning off AT wirelss but site still wants to read that router....is it it that because the router is attached to the AC, it looks to me like the site is reading the AT but it is really reading the Linksys?....

Kind of depends. Basically, the easiest way to get yourself into the Linksys after a factory reset is to plug your PC into the Linksys, leaving the Linksys unplugged from the ActionTec/etc to rule out any other "web servers" on other devices, and then log into the Linksys. That should get you in. If1 192.168.1.1 doesn't work for the Linksys when the Linksys isn't hooked up to the ActionTec, open up command prompt and type in ipconfig and enter in the address given in "Default Gateway" into your browser.

Due to hardware difficulties Verizon recently replaced my Actiontec Rev C router with the Rev D. I had been using the Apple Airport Express with the Rev C and it was working perfectly. I followed the directions in the OP to get it to act as a bridge, although the hardware setup is a bit different.

The Airport Express only has one ethernet jack, so I am using a 5 port ethernet switch to take the place of it. I have ethernet port 2 of the Actiontec going to port 2 of the switch, The WAN Ethernet on the Actiontec to port 1 of the switch and port 3 of the switch going to the Airport Express. This works perfectly for the internet for all of my Macs, although it does not work for the Verizon TV.

Currently with this setup I am getting "No Program Name" under guide for ever channel. "No Program Information" for the description and all TV recording has ceased to work. This was not happening while using the Rev C Actiontec, so it has to be a problem with the setup of the new router. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm certainly not an expert on an Airport Express, but from what i can see from the Apple web site, the Airport Express is a Wireless Access Point (WAP) and is not a router.

These bridging instructions are designed to work with a user router (with separate WAN and LAN ports). What you did is the same as connecting a cat5 cable from an Actiontec LAN port to the Actiontec ethernet WAN port. Yes, it works but is unnecessary, since the Actiontec LAN is normally bridged to the MOCA LAN internally and probably does not accomplish what you want because the AE is not a router. Connecting the Airport Express to the switch is the same as connecting it directly to the Actiontec.

As for the guide data, since you're in CA you have probably received the 1.7 IMG update. See this thread for issues with guide data and the 1.7 IMG:
»problem with guide data on SD boxes since 1.7 IMG upgrade

BTW, there are no appreciable differences in functionality between the Actiontec Rev. C and Rev. D. The Rev. D does have a better wireless card, however.

If all you wanted to do was use the AE as a WAP:
•Forget bridging the Actiontec (do a hard reset)
•Connect the AE to the Actiontec switch
    •Disable wireless in the Actiontec
and be done with it.

Ok, that sounds like it might be the problem. Under System Information it says "Release: 1.7" although under that it says
Guide Data Days Available: 0
IP Address: 0.0.0.0
Network Status: Offline

I have been looking into adding my own router and making the Actiontec a bridge to see if that will correct some wireless issues, but the directions I have seen so far are for either CAT5 or Coax.
My installation has both CAT5 and Coax from the ONT to the router. The router is then connected by CAT5 to the network card in the PC, and the coax is split with links to two set top boxes.
Is it possible to make the Actiontec a bridge and still keep the Guide and other TV features?

Not clear from you post, which WAN connection is active.
Only one WAN connection type can be active. A cat5 WAN connection still requires a coax connection to your main splitter to provide MOCA LAN connectivity for your STBs.

From the following FAQ:
»Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »Replacing the Actiontec (part 1): Coax to Ethernet
quote:
Look at the indicator lights on the front panel. Coax WAN or Ethernet WAN will be lit. That's your data source.

Or you can log in to the Actiontec, click on My Network icon, click on Connections menu item, then see what Broadband Connection is connected. If your connection is PPPoE, then "WAN PPPOE" is through ethernet, and "WAN PPPOE2" is through coax.
If you are on cat5, then you are in good shape. Proceed with this FAQ:
»Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »Replacing the Actiontec (part 3): WAN-to-LAN keeps Guide and VOD (easier)

If coax WAN is active, start with this FAQ:
»Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »Replacing the Actiontec (part 1): Coax to Ethernet

Bilbo

@verizon.net

Both connections are active.
CAT5 carries internet.
Coax carries TV.
Lights on the ONT show activity on both connections and the router shows both ethernet and coax lights. Also logging on to the router shows both links active, a local PC on ethernet and two STBs on coax.
Apparantly, most new installations use only coax, but it seems to depend on how the ONT is configured. I watched the technician pull both cables through the attic, and there are two cables coming out of the ONT as well as two cables from the wall to the router.
Everything is working so this may be more trouble than it is worth since I don't use the wireless that much anyway.
