Got Skype?

Hello! nearly every night I use Skype, to voice chat, text chat, and send/receive files - encrypted even!

This is new?

Do you remember Hush Messenger? It is supposed to encrypt messages free. Also Trillian had the same type of encryption but is was higher than AIM's.

True... I've been doing this since my AIM days...

Even Messenger and Yahoo...

A friend of mine used to call me using one of these IM proggies wayyyy back, before 6meg DL's... It was laggy, but it also was a free long distance phone call.

I remember back in '95 when they had TCP/IP clients (some windows 3.11 program, don't remember the name now) to do this as well. It worked great over a 14.4 modem connection, no long distance bills. I use to talk to friends over it to save money when long distance rates were insane. Back when a lot of those mom and pop dial up ISP were around.

I think what is new is that several companies are now selling this to the business enterprise marketplace. And the companies want to make sure it integrates with their existing systems and has heightened security.

Despite varying features, the one thing that these solutions hold in common is the promise of greater security than that currently provided by public IM networks.

Fortunately, enterprise-grade VoIM solutions from vendors including IBM, Microsoft and Effusia offer built-in security features such as 128-bit SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption to safeguard against intercepted messages and IM-based viruses. Another safe alternative is for companies to turn to IM-management vendors — such as Akonix Systems Inc. and FaceTime Communications — that provide security and compliance services for corporate use of IM and other real-time communications. When it comes to marrying two hot technologies like VoIP and IM, you’re better safe than sorry.
