What can I expect from this? Anybody know what this may be?
The box on the right has been in place for years, the one on the left is new.
Across the road it appears cable or fiber has been buried in a duct below the highway.

I can't answer definitively but similar construction occurred in my very decidedly rural/country neighborhood as dsl was being extended farther from the CO. I admire your photo journalism and the boldness to snap what the phone techs are up to. With your kind of diligence I expect you will soon uncover what they are "up to!" |

A simpler way to find out is just ask them when you see them working on it. I have always found the guys in the field to be pretty easy to talk to, open and willing to give information about what their doing. |

I am hoping more than anything that it will finally bring me 6.0 DSL. I have 3.0 currently and am not eligible for 6.0.

Here | There's a good chance it's for U-verse. It's certainly a Remote Terminal of sorts. Could be increasing the number of POTS lines or it could be a DSLAM.
Is there a lot of new construction in the area? |

Yep, right after the NC legislature passed the legislation, AT&T committed to invest several hundred million in infrastructure upgrades in NC, with more to follow.
I've got my differences with the folks in San Antonio, but I like how once they set their mind on doing something, they ain't bashful about spending money to git-er-done. |

Hmm, if nothing else I think we need to pass this in TN so that maybe they will eventualy find it worth upgrading unupgraded areas in the future.. That way they can offer yet another service along with the dsl which imo would make em more profit and help pay for the expansions even faster.. But thats just my two cents  |

You are not suppose to know this. That is a NSA wire tapping module. Chances are you have been downloading too much porn or speaking Arabic over the phone. I hear it has a word sensitive activator that goes off and makes the batteries explode acid all over your house. All you have to do is say the magic words attack, death to the Americans, or praise Ala.
No, to be honest they are U-verse boxes. Just don't get your hopes up that service is going to happen over night. We had them put in about two years ago. Still majors areas do not have U-verse and they are stilling wiring everyday. However, my DSL was just upgraded to 6Mbps which was not able to happen 6 months ago. |

But thats just my two cents One side of the TN House has passed the bill, now they are waiting to pass it on the other side.
But be forewarned, they are saying that Metro-Nashville probably wont see it until Jan '09 and the more rural areas(read Bon Aqua) probably wont see it unti 3-4 years later.
With that being said, BS/ATT has been doing alot of what the OP has posted here in Columbia. I see new boxes going up everywhere. |

| it is a crossbox. also, I totally HATE to burst anyones bubble, but the work that's being done in Morganton is replacing some of the old phone lines, and as for the duct; it is for fiber, but none is going to be pulled in the duct you see in the pics for quite a while.
Sorry, I'm a directional driller, and work for the 2nd biggest Utility Contractor in NC. I have a bunch of buddies who work with all the providers, and other contractors. One of which is currently working out of town in Morganton, and unfortunetly this isn't for U-verse. Sorry fellas |
