thanks Koma, but this has happened on my previous desktop as well, so I'd think it'd be rare that I got same attack on 2 different computers. this one is brand new Dell. I'm pretty advanced at troubleshooting and keeping system "clean". I suppose it's possible. will keep checking.

The attack would be against the 2wire init itself not the computer. if that helps.

ok, thanks. link didnt seem to offer any real solution to the problem though. I guess if that's the cause, not much I can do.

well disable netbios and remote mangement and any unneeded srvices in the mdc console and change the default ip scheme to somthing else is a work around i think. as it disables the default »home and »gateway.2wire.net urls for accessing the 2wire so you would only be able to acces it with your new ip sceme.

would you believe it if I told you they are already disabled. LOL. this problem just keeps comimg back. also seems to have started when I started with Vista. must be some kind of poisonous combination
