| Office 2007 on XP needs optimized
I am looking for suggestions on how to optimize or speedup Office 2007.
I recently installed the full package, and it is so slow on this computer.
Dell Latitude D830 2gb memory 33gb free disk space Core Duo 2 ghz. I am running Service pack 1 on office Service pack 2 on XP Pro 3072 mb swap file
All programs take much longer to open that 2003 did,The program opens much faster than a file if I double click on a file. The program will be open for 30 seconds before the file opens.
Any suggestions are welcome. -- Best of luck

| First defragment the drive and let the system open the programs a few times to see what speed will end up being "normal"
You may need to reboot also to get the registry set up properly.
It probably will get better to a point once it is firmly integrated in the system. |

What does that mean? Can you provide details on what you mean by that statement? |

1 edit | reply to jtudor I just mean right after you install something it isn't in prefetch yet, and it is opening for the first time, often making temp file locations and more.
After a few reboots, a defrag and it will open like it will for the rest of the time.
Even shutting off a system or starting one that has such a major (and huge) software install like office it will often take much much longer to start and stop for a few times, then it gets normal again.
To test, turn off your system and time it off and on, then uninstall Office and time that shut/start cycle. It will be different. When you reinstall office, it will take much longer to open the first time than it does now before you mess with all the reg settings and things office puts in a machine. |

Did you "clean install" Office 2007 or upgrade a previous installation of Office 2003?
Are the files that are slow to open newly created, with Office 2007, or files created with Office 2003 or both? |

| reply to jtudor There may also be updates for your AV software since AV programs often scan every program and file that opens. It may need differnet updates with the different version of Office. (just a guess)
You can temporarily disable (turn off) the AV programs to see if they are delaying the opening of your files and office. (It is likely they do slow things down) |

I do have Service pack 1 installed. -- Best of luck

| What a big difference those tips made, maybe a clean install is not necessary now.
Thanks!! -- Best of luck
