| Which broadband for VoIP
[disclaimer]VoIP newbie here![/disclaimer]
Am looking for a VoIP provider for in-home business use with unlimited calling from/to Canada/US. Vonage is the one I've heard most about, and may well be my choice.
My area has both DSL and cable broadband available. Presently I am on DSL with 640kbps upstream and 5Mbps downstream. Which flavour of broadband works best with VoIP, or are they equal?
Also, Vonage seems to frequently change the adapters they offer--their help area lists many former adapters which are no longer on the products page, one of which is the D-Link VWR. I presently have a D-Link DI-604 (four-port wired) router with which I am happy, but need more ports. I had hoped to use the D-Link VWR which includes a four-port wired (plus wireless) router, but Vonage no longer offers it, and it is too pricey to purchase elsewhere because the current Vonage offerings are all currently instant-rebated to near zero cost. So, I purchased a D-Link DGS-1005G five-port wired gigabit switch, but haven't been able to find any reviews on it. Will these components (D-Link DI-604 and D-Link DGS-1005G, along with my current DSL) work well with the Vonage V-Portal and with the Vonage service in general?

| At the moment, I prefer cable, but that's just because it's cheaper where I am. If I were to choose, I'd pick a strong DSL line like you have with your 5000/640 connection. It's a dedicated resource and not nearly as prone to network congestion as cable, especially during Internet rush hour. |

| reply to Qwerky I have both running into my home office, but I prefer DSL. It tends to have greater uptime, albeit generally slower where I live in Houston.
Cable is bandwidth shared between the neighbors connected to the POD in your area. So while it's faster it will vary depending upon usage by others near you.
Finally, DSL providers have not been known to fiddle with p2p or voip traffic as often as cable companies seem to.
