bstock join:2006-09-09 Los Angeles, CA | [General] Sending E-Mail Problem Recently, I've had three instances of problems sending e-mail to people. The e-mail bounce back with permanent errors. It's hard to figure out the cryptic messages, but even though the errors are not identical, they look like the problem is that the receiver is rejecting the e-mail because of the IP address EarthLink assigns to me. (EL assigns me IP addresses dynamically.)
I'll give all three error messages but hide the e-mail addresses themselves:
1. First
xxx@yyy.com SMTP error from remote mailer after RCPT TO:: host mail.yyy.com [69.63.85.102]: 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for xxx@yyy.com
I believe my IP address was 216.175.82.55.
2. Second
xxx@yyy.org SMTP error from remote mailer after RCPT TO:: host mail.yyy.org [66.124.49.85]: 550 5.7.1 SPF access denied; see »spf.pobox.com
I believe my IP address was 216.175.86.96.
3. Third
xxx@sbcglobal.net Delay reason: SMTP error from remote mail server after MAIL FROM:: host sbcmx2.prodigy.net [207.115.20.21]: 451 4.7.7 Excessive userid unknowns from 209.86.89.70
This is very frustrating, not the least because it's not clear whether it's a problem at the sending or receiving end, or both, and whether each of the three problems has a different cause.
If anyone can shed any light on this, I'd be grateful. Or if there is a better forum to raise this issue (I raised it on an EL newgroup, but EL newsgroups are not very active), please let me know. I tried contacting EarthLink Live Help, but they were completely useless.
BTW, I use Outlook 2003 as my e-mail program, and as far as I can tell, it's properly configured for using EL's authenticated server.
Thanks. |

See this earlier thread: »Earthlink problems with email to & from SBCGlobal
My best guess is that some spammer rooted an Earthlink customer's computer and sent enough spam to get one or more Earthlink mailservers blacklisted. |

I also included the third problem because I thought it might be related to the first two, just different receiving servers rejecting e-mail from EL because of supposed spam issues. |
