those "poor" broke people...

I mean, as if they aren't already making money like crazy from everyone's cable bill...

This should be illegal.

Question - how can you find out if your ISP is doing this? Any way to test for such things, or is it completely invisible to the user?

Depends on state privacy laws. If you're a California resident, you should have been notified when you opened the account and given a manner in which to opt out. If you're not a Cali resident, and, in the absence of state privacy law, yer SOL.

I'd be curious how many in the state have contacted their ISP and exactly what kind of "disclosure" they received.

Clickstream data isn't personally identifiable. They can't figure out your name or your address or your DOB from what websites you browse (unless you typed it in at some point, but only a human can figure out that that is personally identifiable (remember AOL search data contraversy?)).

And this makes you feel better about your ISP following you around the Net, seeing what you do, recording it and then selling it to the highest bidder?

Re: those "poor" broke people...

Whoops, need more coffee. What I was going to say was, any privacy laws like that California one, have nothing to do with controlling clickstream data, since its not personally identifiable.
