Thank you Guspaz and nanook for your help. I have also signed up for TSI Home phone, and as soon as they get satellite (i hope) I will drop XVU, and be done with Bell completely !!!!

| reply to Guspaz said by Guspaz :I also believe that 2wire only sells their equipment directly to service providers, and not retail stores. Correct. I should have mentioned that as well. Thanks.
said by Guspaz :It would not be better, no. However, many users prefer this due to the cost savings and convenience. In addition to cost and convenience, ISTM the question is not necessarily better (or worse.) The question should be is the 2Wire "good enough" to make something like a WRT54G, with or without 3rd-party firmware, unnecessary? IMO for most people the answer is yes.
BTW that point also applies to the 2700HG vs. 526 as DSL modems. If you have a decent quality line then either modem is "good enough." If you are on a marginal line then some people have found one to be better than the other, with some preferring the 2700HG and others the 516.
As always YMMV. |

I also have one friend who, while he has a WRT54G running Tomato, uses the 2wire's built-in router/wireless. He instead uses the WRT54G as a wireless bridge to connect his Xbox 360 to his wireless network without having to pay for the exorbitantly expensive Microsoft wireless peripheral. |

| reply to nanook I also believe that 2wire only sells their equipment directly to service providers, and not retail stores. They're not a retail product. Since TekSavvy doesn't carry them, the only way to get them is units that other service providers (like Bell, AT&T, SBC, etc.) have sold off as returns. |

| reply to reckless said by reckless :Also, i've read about the modems available (2wire and speedtouch 516). Alot of people recommend the 2wire, but it is only available as a factory refurb? If this modem is so good, why are they all refurbished units? Is the 516 better, because I don't mind paying more for a better modem. The 2Wires that people (me included) use are model 2700HG. They are only available refurbished because 2Wire has replaced them with the model 2701HG. This model looks different but is essentially the same internally.
FWIW both Bell and Telus supply 2Wire, as well as Siemens Speedstream, modems to their customers. They no longer ship Thompson SpeedTouch (like the 516.) There is nothing wrong with the 516 except that being new it costs more more. The 516 also lacks the 4-port router and WiFi capabilities that come on the 2700HG/2701HG. |

| reply to reckless We typically recommend if you're going to be signing up with us to inform us of the deactivation date with Sympatico and activate the service for the same date. The reason for this is it lowers the possibility of disruption of service. What could potentially happen is if you sign up right away with us then they will most likely pull the line card and we would need to submit a PIE process.

| reply to TSI Rick I just cancelled my Sympatico account. The woman on the phone asked me why and I said I wasn't happy with the speed they were giving me. She put me on hold for 5 mins. then came back and said we will give you another $5/mo. off and I said no thanks, and then she said you know you are on an unlimited plan (for $32.95/mo.) and there are no other ISPs that offer a true unlimited plan, and I said oh ya, i've found one. I then was put on hold for another 5 mins. and then she gave me the confirmation number and I got her name and ID number. Should I now wait before signing up with TSI, or can I sign up right away? (I don't care about paying for both for the month either.) Also, i've read about the modems available (2wire and speedtouch 516). | reply to nanook This changed quite some time ago....there were too many people abusing the system and it needed to change. Now the logins are not activated until a few days prior to the activation date. The activation date in this case is 4/28, so the client is paying every month on the 23rd for the 28th to the 27th. The first payment was processed today so that he could use the service from the 28th to the 27th.

| reply to DrXenon said by DrXenon :Your up to 5.0 Megabit residential service is set to be tentatively activated on 4/28/2008 anywhere between the hours of 8am to 12am. Mine said essentially the same thing. I was able to use my new TSI login immediately.
Your first bill was processed today, and your monthly prepaid billing date from now on will be on the 23 of each month, starting in May. Mine said essentially the same thing. My first invoice was dated the same date that I applied to TSI and got my login. The charge appeared on my online credit card account 3 days later. My second invoice was dated about 6 weeks after the first. Both invoices are for a full month of service so it seems I got a couple of weeks for "free." (Possibly this was an attempt by TSI to save me from having to pay both Bell and TSI during the overlap period.) |

Just to confirm, though, I won't be billed by TS for April, right? |

| reply to d3ath Here's the relevant part of my confirmation email. It says my first day of service will be April 28, which would seem to imply that I'm not paying for service right now.

| reply to Guspaz said by Guspaz :Not quite. TekSavvy will only activate your login if your activation date is relatively close to when you pay. If your first month of billed service is next month, you won't be able to use your login until then. That was not my experience. The TSI account application process warns that your credit card will be billed as soon as your application has been confirmed. I signed up for TSI the moment I got a cancellation number from Sympatico. I indicated that the cancellation with Bell would be a month into the future. I was able to start using my TSI account as soon as I got and confirmed the login a few hours later. My credit card was billed immediately.
Now it may be possible to defer this when you apply, but (a) there does not seem to be a way to do that online and (b) since DrXenon already has his TSI login I assume it is now too late for him to do that even by telephone. |
