Are you sure? Bell does not sell their modems. If you paid $79 or whatever for the 6520 in order to get home networking then no, you did not buy the modem. You only paid for an upgrade over their standard, non-networking 4200/5200 series modem.

Let me guess...Bell neglected to tell you. They will remind you, however, when they demand that you return their modem.
Bell tried that when I cancelled too. I was under the impression that I owned the 6520, a small point which I confirmed with the rep when I cancelled. Then I got a please return the modem letter. Needless to say I didn't return it. With the original package contents that I kept, I found a "Proof of Purchase" given to me by Bell. It specifically says "Please retain this proof of purchase for warranty coverage" at the bottom, lists the 6520 kit and my name and address. This was proof enough for me that it was mine -- fortunately Bell backed down and decided not to contest the meaning of "Proof of Purchase". I was really expecting Bell to pull a Bill Clinton and argue with me what the meaning of the word "of" is. Thankfully I spoke with someone intelligent (the second time I had to call in).

Interesting. I have never heard of that before. Every Bell modem has been available on rental only for as long as I have been with Sympatico, going back to the 1990s and the Nortel modems.

From the day the 6300 HNW offer was introduced it has always been an upgrade to the standard-issue modem. I got a "free" 6300 when they first came out and Bell went to great pains to remind me that the upgrade, not the modem itself, was free. For sure there was no "proof of purchase" in the modem kit I got from Bell. That is also what the Bell reps over on the Sympatico forum keep reminding people under similar circumstances.

But perhaps at some point they did run a promotion that included a modem that you could own. Do you remember any other details about how you got the 6520.

A Bell telemarketer called me (before I started hanging up on them). It was a promotional offer between May 4, 2005 and June 1 2005. Originally the telemarketer lied to me (who would have thought) and said it was a free D-Link Wireless Router. When the box arrived it was a 6520. The literature said "We are please to offer you our free Bell Sympatico Wireless Home Networking Modem".

I was sure I would have to return it when I cancelled just because of who Bell is (lying, deceiving marketing, BS service fees, on and on and on). I figured I was duped back in 2005. Then I found the Proof of Purchase and I thought Wait a minute here! What are these guys trying to pull! The first call I made told me that I rented it and Bell never sold modems. I faxed in a strongly worded letter and the Proof of Purchase to some anonymous 800 number and never heard back (like I was expecting to). I called in again and the lady put a note on my account that if I was charged $75 for non-return to reverse the charges as even she couldn't argue with a Proof of Purchase.

I was glad to say good-bye to Bell ...

Could you please scan and post the Proof of Purchase as a public service for departing Sympatico customers? [evil grin]

Found a scanner ... I've removed my name and address a few digits from the S/N.

Thanks. But it probably will not work because it is personalized. I was thinking that maybe it was just a generic card or sheet of paper.

When I got the 6300 they sent a similar sheet of paper but mine explicitly says "6300 HN Exchange Kit" and there is no "Proof of Purchase."

BTW I would also obscure the bar code and order/delivery numbers if you do not want the scan to be traceable back to you.

I may have been lucky in the time I signed up that it was actually a free 6520. I'm not surprised that Bell has no record of it either.

I did some more scrubbing on the scan as you suggested.

got another question about bell side, when i cancel bell, do they send an e-mail to me that it had been cancel with the refernce number and date? They also said they would send a kit for modem return but still didn't get. Does this mean bell didn't cancel my internet yet? Called on Feb.22.2008 to cancel. Is that enough time to send my kit?

If you haven't received a kit then go drop it off at a local Bell World store where you'll get a receipt for the return. I suggest holding onto and filing the receipt away for a minimum of 6 months in case Bell pulls a fast one on you.

I respectfully disagree for the reasons I gave earlier on this thread. Those who ignore Bell's own official instructions are setting themselves up for a world of hurt if that modem goes AWOL somewhere within Bell's own black hole of bureaucracy.

I mentioned this detail to ericb from kcrull's office, because i have a bell store so close to me (where i once gave back a modem without any problems in 2001).
He did insist it would be much better to send back the modem by mail with the return package they'll send.

I asked him if it was really more secure to send the modem by mail rather then give the modem in person to a real person working for them, which shouldn't make much sense to our intuition; but he kept insisting that the regular (mail) procedure is highly recommended.

If they expect the modem by mail, I won't complicate the situation by going to the store, even though this should have been a better option.

If I don't care about being double billed for some service, is there any reason not to sign up for teksavvy until my Bell internet is fully canceled? What I mean to say is if I am still with bell, would there be any problems using teksavvy for part of the last month I am with bell?

Sorry if i am hijacking this thread, figured it would be the best place since I too am leaving bell.

See the second post in this thread, especially item 4.

how long it usually take for the kit to arrive in the mail?

The latest family member to decamp Bell for TekSavvy had a cancellation date of 21Feb08. His modem mailer arrived 29Feb08. I just finished packaging the modem and will take it to the post office on Monday.

Okay just wanted to mention how useful this thread has been but I am kind of stuck between cancelling.

Two years ago I had an agent tell me I purchased the modem for a 100 bucks and today I called in ready to cancel having a representative tell me that Bell does not sell modems. And the fee I paid was to "upgrade" my modem... Have you guys run into this?

Also if I am to switch to Teksavvy, did you guys purchase their modem? Is it an actual purchase are you somehow charged a hidden rental fee.

That is the norm for Bell. The situation above with the "Proof of Purchase" is a rare exception.

You have three options:
1. Rent a modem from TSI and pay the monthly rental fee just as you did at Bell.
2. Buy a modem from TSI for a one-time fee. TSI will configure it and provide support but if the modem breaks out-of-warranty you will need to replace it.
3. Buy a modem elsewhere for a (usually) lower price. TSI will help with config/support on a best-efforts basis but technically that is all your responsibility.

If you choose 3. do a search on "2Wire 2700HG." There are several sources of refurbished 2700HGs for $25 to $30.

To clarify option 1, last time I checked TekSavvy offered a rent-to-own service. You payed half the cost up front and the other half of the cost over the next 6 months. After that you own your modem, it's basically just a purchase plan.

So the purchase(s) from teksavvy would actually be a purchase to keep, unlike Bell, which was actual a rent and the agent neglected to tell me?

I am thinking of option #3, thank you guys for the help!

Very useful thread and thanks again.

Yes, when you buy a modem from TekSavvy it's yours to keep. Option #3 is a good once, TekSavvy conveniently pre-configures all their modems but if you don't need that you can get a better deal elsewhere.
