| reply to TSI Rick Re: Switching from bell to teksavvy.
I just cancelled my Sympatico account. The woman on the phone asked me why and I said I wasn't happy with the speed they were giving me. She put me on hold for 5 mins. then came back and said we will give you another $5/mo. off and I said no thanks, and then she said you know you are on an unlimited plan (for $32.95/mo.) and there are no other ISPs that offer a true unlimited plan, and I said oh ya, i've found one. I then was put on hold for another 5 mins. and then she gave me the confirmation number and I got her name and ID number. Should I now wait before signing up with TSI, or can I sign up right away? (I don't care about paying for both for the month either.) Also, i've read about the modems available (2wire and speedtouch 516). Alot of people recommend the 2wire, but it is only available as a factory refurb? If this modem is so good, why are they all refurbished units? Is the 516 better, because I don't mind paying more for a better modem.

| We typically recommend if you're going to be signing up with us to inform us of the deactivation date with Sympatico and activate the service for the same date. The reason for this is it lowers the possibility of disruption of service. What could potentially happen is if you sign up right away with us then they will most likely pull the line card and we would need to submit a PIE process.

They are only available refurbished because 2Wire has replaced them with the model 2701HG. This model looks different but is essentially the same internally.
FWIW both Bell and Telus supply 2Wire, as well as Siemens Speedstream, modems to their customers. They no longer ship Thompson SpeedTouch (like the 516.) There is nothing wrong with the 516 except that being new it costs more more. The 516 also lacks the 4-port router and WiFi capabilities that come on the 2700HG/2701HG. |

| I also believe that 2wire only sells their equipment directly to service providers, and not retail stores. They're not a retail product. Since TekSavvy doesn't carry them, the only way to get them is units that other service providers (like Bell, AT&T, SBC, etc.) have sold off as returns. |

| It would not be better, no. However, many users prefer this due to the cost savings and convenience.
I also have one friend who, while he has a WRT54G running Tomato, uses the 2wire's built-in router/wireless. He instead uses the WRT54G as a wireless bridge to connect his Xbox 360 to his wireless network without having to pay for the exorbitantly expensive Microsoft wireless peripheral. |

said by Guspaz :It would not be better, no. However, many users prefer this due to the cost savings and convenience. In addition to cost and convenience, ISTM the question is not necessarily better (or worse.) The question should be is the 2Wire "good enough" to make something like a WRT54G, with or without 3rd-party firmware, unnecessary? IMO for most people the answer is yes.
BTW that point also applies to the 2700HG vs. 526 as DSL modems. If you have a decent quality line then either modem is "good enough." If you are on a marginal line then some people have found one to be better than the other, with some preferring the 2700HG and others the 516.
As always YMMV. |
