4 edits | XP SP3 (3311) standalone now available for download
If you want the standalone version of build 3111 you have to go to this site and go down to the post by Mt.Dew. The direct link is there. Sorry that I originally post the direct link, which is against the rules.

Thank you! It's downloading at 190KB/sec on a 5mbps connection..yuck. But I am glad to be able to get it even if it does take 30 minutes to download. |

1 edit | reply to ltsnow Downloaded it. Installed fine. But now the UXTheme-Patch-For-Windows-XP-SP2-Final patch doesn't work anymore.
Oh Well, back to the blah Windows XP look!
Silly me, decided to see if any other themes would work. Picked one, applied, total BLACK ness! So rather than play where's the menu, went into safe mode, chose the Admin icon & picked no at the pop up option box to run system restore and went back to just before I installed it. May try again AFTER deleting all of the extra theme files FIRST! -- I'm Forever Folding For Team Helix |

| reply to ltsnow It sure took a long time to install. Then it said it had reboot. During shutdown I saw a brief flash of an error message from the host machine in the low resolution mode that an error message will show in when Explorer has crashed on the Host machine. Then I got a popup asking that I send a crash report to Microsoft. I did. Then DrWatson crashed and I sent a report on that and then clicked on the link provided for "more information" about the crash. That link told me that the crash was caused by Windows and I was able to provide feedback explaining exactly what I was doing when Explorer crashed. I hate Explorer crashing on the host because I can get Explorer running again via Task Manager and I can see the tray icons but nothing is clickable and Start is not there. So, I had shut down everything via Task Manager.
I noticed when the virtual machine that now has SP3 release candidate on it rebooted that the logo screen was tiny ...I wonder why? -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. | reply to ltsnow Installed this. Everything seems normal. Download took 10 minutes @ 528 kb/sec, installation about the same. Then defragging and registry cleaning another 10.
Did the PCpitstop test, broadbandreports tweak test and ShieldsUP. All normal.
The only thing that happened upon a restart after installation was the OE icon was missing from the desktop.
It seems to have retained all other settings and all programs work.
Haven't decided yet to go back with an image or leave it.
XPSP3 doesn't seem to do much of anything other than update updates to SP2, which I already had. There are some minor embellishments, but none seem relevant for me.
I think it is a waste of time except for XP SP1 users.
No charge from me for this .

| I went to bed shortly after installing it. Just now, I got on the computer to find ProcessGuard asking what to do about Windows Defragger which wanted to run. I should have thought about that last night as obviously you would need to run defrag after this installation. I told PG to let it run and then it didn't run.
PG is alerting very frequently now because everything has changed. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. | reply to ltsnow When the final of SP3 is released, is there any pressing reason why everyone absolutely "needs" this? I haven't seen anything posted in the threads about it that indicate that. What is it bringing to the table that is new and/or different? It basically seems to be a conglomeration of fixes and security updates since SP 2 was released, unless I've missed something. |

| reply to ltsnow I'd been running the 3264 build and now installed the 3311 build. From what I can tell, the networking in the SP3 seems to be more in line with Vista. Many of the security and other network features in Vista are now in XP with SP3. It also appears that the XP Firewall has been beefed up a bit, to be more along the lines of that in Vista.
Of course this is just subjective, but it does appear to be a bit "peppier" in action, as well. |

| reply to ltsnow i'm building a pc for a customer next week, and i want to slipstream this with her xp install cd. her install cd doesn't even have sp2, so this would save me the time/trouble of all the updates. do you all think this is stable enough to put on a technophobe's pc? it sounds to me like this is nearly the final release. -- The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth |

| reply to ltsnow Downloaded fine. The install goes fine until it gets to the part where it wants to start up all the services to test them- it hangs right there.
Disabled and closed everything in the right side of the taskbar that was remotely security related. Then let it restore and did it again- with the same result.
Started the system in Safe Mode and it had the same results. System is doing fine with the third automatic backout and restore.
Might be just about anything causing the glitch. Since it wouldn't do it in Safe Mode I'm betting it is hardware related. I have an Nvidia Lanparty board with the hardware firewall active. Also running an SATA drive. I get a raid failure upon bootup for some reason for the last few days. I'm not running any raid drives.
This isn't to draw all of you out to try and figure this out. I'm going to wait for the full release then try it again. This is to let you know that at least one failure has happened, and some ballpark reasons why that might be.
My assumptions above as to why it is happening is just a bunch of guesses. Good to see it's going so well for everyone else. -- You're an American. You get a free pass, but nobody rides for free. |
