[DW4000] ping to DNS IPs fails - help plese!

Hi all, first post, thanks for the 'anon' capability.

dw4000 system, win xp, amd 64

Things started to deteriorate connection-wise since I added 2x1G RAM to my existing 2x512. prolly coincidence, but thought I'd mention.

As of this morning, no pages will load (firefox), getting the "possible NOC problem / satellite outage" message.

zipcode 95602 (greater Sacramento / Auburn; don't have sat. details right now; i'm at work, problem is w/ home connection).

tried pinging any of the DNS IPs: 66.82.4.8, 198.77.116.8, 207.69.188.185/6 all with 100% packet loss.

Gateway problem? Is the default Gateway tied to the Satellite I'm pointing at?

Thanks,
Chris

Sounds like the same exact thing i just went through with my 4000 system.»[DW4000] Outlook Express Although mine was after i re-ran websetup. I called CS and basically was forced to upgrade to the 7000. I just got it yesterday for only $25 shipping.

Hmmmm, Unless your two cases are totally coincidental, maybe it's finally come down to the wire. Hughes has been herding legacy customers into dedicated gateways for a year now. Perhaps they've finally moved on to actually freezing out the old PC-based systems - giving legacy customers little alternative but to upgrade or quit.

I also re-ran websetup (though it took MANY tries to get it to work; kept failing (timing-out) just at the very end).

Hm, OK, I'll be calling CS next.

I also have a WISP provider coming to our prop. tomorrow to do a site inspection If that's a go, then it'll be b'bye Hughes.

Honestly, i think the time has come IMO...I have had no browsing problems whatsoever with speeds over 1k for a while until i ran websetup-then they got me!

If the WISP is a no-go, check to see if you can get EVDO /mobile broadband in your neck of the woods.

Hey, here's a follow-up.

First, I'm home, and connected via dial-up, cuz that's all that will work!

I just got off the phone w/ CS - an amazingly short conversation. I was all braced for a marathon, having to re-explain all the Chat Sessions I'd had online last night and this morning.

BUT. Once she had all my account info, knowing I am on a DW4000, she just blurted out that Hughes is in the process of migrating (consolidating?) these customers to different / new sat/gateways/something. (thick Indian accent )

Basically, I should try websetup again 3 times in the next 24 hours; if I don't see improvement, she gave me a case#.

So, I'll keep y'all posted.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just saw for the 1st time today the acronym "EVDO" I'll have to do some reading-up on that and mobile broadband.

Wow! Well, here I am a mere 2hr 15min later, writing to you via sat!

Just got done w/ websetup (again took a couple tries), and indeed do have a different def. gateway address. And nice speedy response.

Let's see how long it lasts! (crossing fingers for WISP...)

I am glad you got yours back up. I did websetup at least 10 times in a 2 day span. Personally i see no big improvement in this 7000 over the 4000 other then it being self-hosted and upload speeds. Download speeds are the same. Good luck!

Thanks but it was a short-lived romance. After about an hour last night it deteriorated back into uselessness. 50-100% loss on the pings, to all the DNS addresses I know (6). Same this morning. Even after re-running websetup.

So, I'll wait 'til this evening, run it again, and see if there's any change. Else, back to CS.

Not sure where you are, but I'd still recommend checking out EVDO. I'm sitting here in my truck, at a truck stop, with better speeds than my two-way satellite ever gave me.

Ditch the dish:D

Yeah, I'll look into it depending on the outcome of the site survey. That's happening today for sure - sunny clear skies; Saturday was windy/raining/low clouds, no go.

Update on the current dw4000 situation: spoke w/ CS again this morning; it's going to be escalated to Hughes. They confirmed that my websetup has not only changed the gateway, but more to the point I'm getting a different freq. off my satellite; 1370 instead of 1410 before. This is the "expected" change that Hughes was trying to implement.

My pings are better this morning, but browsing still horrible / useless.

FYI,
Chris

Having the same problem with a legacy DW3000 one-way.
Have run websetup once so far with no result. Will keep trying and report any results. If it does not clear soon,
it's off to another service. The alternatives are not good, but none have worse CS than Hughes.

Following up on previous. Did not have to re-run websetup here, but just brought up DW Navigator, and everything was on again. Did run websetup earlier in the day, but with no results at the time.

The signal "like a ton of bricks" is for the site survey I had done for a new WISP provider - not satellite.

Update on the sat. is that browsing via sat. still sucks, pings to IP addresses still typically lose 50%. I was on with CS this evening and they - and Hughes - are well aware of the problem that has ensued since the DW4000 folks did the websetup about a week ago that switched us over to a different frequency & gateway. The support agent gave me over to his manager, who sympathized, said there are about 400 customers like me (DW4000) who are all greatly impacted by the latest transponder switch. Some sort of new "fix" will be attempted possible Monday. Off the record, he said it may very well come down to a free modem upgrade for all DW4000 customers.

Basically, dial-up is faster than sat. right now (and how I'm coming to you).

My WISP install was supposed to occur yesterday, but while the signal was great from the driveway, all the roof/eave mount locations were starting to have line-of-sight impinged by various foliage (and tree leaf-out is still to come).

So, since he had only brought 2.4GHz antenna, we decided that for my utmost happiness he should come back w/ 900MHz equipment tomorrow.

And so it goes.

I had the same problem with dw4000 got off the phone with level 4 last night. They are now saying it is the modem and nothing they can do. I guess it is time to move on to a different provider. I have had this service since dial return but enough is enough.

Agreed. Today my WISP install was completed.

(need emoticon for ear-to-ear grin!)

The latency and the upload are freakin' all-the-difference-in-the-world! (yes, DL is better too). But upload, man. I maintain a webpage for my family to share photos of our daughter. I just uploaded 21 jpegs to my domain host in the amount of time it use to take 1 or 2 images before.
