Name of Atari SIO socket type

13 pin, like a jumbo size 2600 controller connector

Here it is on an Atarimax SIO to USB board

Like an ass I broke one of the pins off my Atari 800's male SIO socket but can't find a replacement via google. It's similar is shape to the old 2600 / C64 controllers, just bigger with 4 extra pins. It's about 1 to 1.5" wide.

I noticed that my Atarimax USB to SIO converter has a new one on it so obviously SOMEONE out there is making it and I just don't know the name for this type of socket.

Anyone able to identify the name of this socket type so I can find a replacement part at Digikey or the like? It's a very simple fix and finding the connector is the hardest part.

Thanks.

. . . . finding the connector is the hardest part.

Let me look through my junk box in the shop tomorrow, I may be able to come up with a couple.

Looks like a standard DB series connector to me. I would call it a DB-13.

I've also sent an email to Atarimax to see if they'll sell me one separately.

I found an old 810 drive you can cannibalize if needed.

Thanks, I'll PM you if I can't find it from a vendor.

If you broke a pin why don't you just repair it? De-solder it then remove and replace...Should take like 5 mins to do that. If you are looking for a pin, all you need is a solid wire like the one in good brand coax cables.

Can't replace the pin. SIO connectors are stiff and would bend a coax center.

Can you please post back here to let us know you were able to effect the repair?

The reason I ask is: if you have problems finding the part, I can dig out contact information for a guy I used to buy Atari stuff from. He actually used to print a paper catalog of what he had.

It would take 2-3 days for me to rummage round and find the contact information, which is why I would view my offer as a "last resort." I make it solely in the interest of not having your 800 end up forlornly gathering dust in the corner in case you're not able to make other arrangements.

[sheds manly tear at the thought]

I was able to get it from Best Electronics (insert shameless plug here »www.best-electronics-ca.com/ ), a very good Atari parts dealer that my brother has been using a while. Their site is a bit hokey but my brother said they always have odd parts and they're usually very cheap (compared to places like Atarimax). I looked over their prices and they do look very reasonable.

Anyway the best part is it was only $5 for the connector. I guess they're up in the Bay Area and I'm in SoCal so I should back back up and running by the weekend.

Thanks all for the willingness to part with yer parts!

If you don't mind my asking, how did you happen to break the connector?

I'm glad to hear you went with Best. They were actually the folks I had in mind. It's been a few years since I did anything with my 2600 stuff, so I'm afraid their name slipped my mind.

It's good to hear that their prices are reasonable. Frankly, I'm never quite sure what some of those parts "ought to" go for, seeing as how a lot of his stuff is at least somewhat hard to come by.

The guy who runs Best managed to bag a metric diaperload of Atari's stuff when they went under in 1996. The place is a bit of a hovel (warehouse with a retail front) but it's fun to talk shop with the proprietor. And with big-box electronics retailers being the norm, I must say that it's a rare treat to talk to someone on the retail end who actually knows what the hell he's talking about.

Anyway, glad to hear you found what you needed. I hadn't heard of Atarimax, but I'll take a look at their stuff when I get a chance.

Of course, I now have this incredibly strong urge to break out the Darth Vader model 2600 and play VCS games until my arms fall off and my eyeballs shrivel up and fall from their sockets.

It's all your fault.

I was a big time fan of Atari computers back in the 80's. May I ask what do you use the 800 mainly for?
