Dilemma, upgrade HD on Centrino NB or buy new Dual Core NB

The 60GB HD on my 12" Dell 700m Centrino Pent M 1.7ghz is getting maxed out. It is not my main machine, but I do use it every weekday while mobile to surf, shop, watch slingbox, etc. I have a newer Vista desktop at home so this laptop doesnt get used much.

New notebooks are $400-$700. New 120GB HD cost $80.

I have 2 batteries for this thing and they are both in excellent condition, 2 AC adaptors and some more accessories. I figure I could get at least a few mores years squeezed out of this machine with a larger HD but newer NB's are so much faster.

So, is it worth the money to buy a new unit or just a HD. The new unit would also be bigger, 14-15" which is another drawback. I want 12" or smaller and not bigger.

Well, IMHO there is still plenty of "life" left in that notebook, and for surfing/shopping/slingbox etc., plenty enough "pop" still.

Easy enough to schlepp a new drive, and a heck of a lot cheaper, especially if your desktop is your "primary" system anyway.

I think the HD speed is a major bottle neck on my Dell. I have 1.5GB RAM and the HD is stock. Either a 4,200 or 5,400 RPM drive.

I'm going to go ahead an order a HITACHI Travelstar 100GB 7200 RPM or the Seagate Momentus 7200.1 100GB 2.5" Ultra ATA/100 7200 RPM. 100GB was the biggest I could find and it'll cost me around $120 total.

I was going to recommend you got a faster drive. If you don't do any gaming or heavy graphics work (it should handle basic Photoshop stuff fine) there's no reason to upgrade. Why waste money and destroy the environment in the process if you don't have to?

I have an HP compaq nc6220 with the same CPU setup, 1.5GB RAM & a Hitachi 7200rpm drive and it runs just fine for the office work I use it for. Even ran Vista fine (not that I like it) and about as fast as XP when the visual effects were disabled.
