Getting connected with Bell

I am currently a cogeco. Later this week I am getting the satellite, phone, and internet connected with Bell. I am wondering how internet works in my area ( Peterborough downtown area). I notice that the 16 meg is not available according to Bell's website). I am going to hook with the 7/1 meg connect. Also, is there one modum that considered to be better, if Bell uses more than one type.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Do you live in a house, apartment/condo? If it's the latter two, the set-top box that Bell delivers will service all three services; satellite/phone/internet. The set-top box will service three televisions, and has a built-in-modem for Sympatico HiSpeed. A separate modem is not required, as your building would be equipped as VDSL. On-the-other-hand, if you live in a house, I'm not sure how that works.

You plan to hookup with the UP TO 7mbps.

Don't go by the Better Bell Home advertised prices since you have to tack on:
i) $2.99 Touchtone and 911
ii) $2.00 modem rental
iii) $3.00 Digital Service Fee

The only reason I'm saying this is that most reps think that these "hidden" fees are included in the quoted price on the commercials.

You're leaving Cogeco internet for Bell?

Why? If I could get Cogeco I would switch to it.

If you check my post, you will see that I am not just getting internet but also satellite tv and phone service bundled. I am doing this for a couple of reasons. First, the bundle will cost me $40.00 less a month than what I am currently paying and second, I am frustrated with my cogeco internet. They started enforcing bandwidth caps last fall, which left me with a decision to make. I could either change my plan or leave Cogeco. I opted to get a commercial account which would let me use 200 gig a month instead of 100 gig on the previous plan. The new plan was supposed to give me the same service of 16/1 meg connect.
As time has went on my bandwidth has dropped significantly during the evening to 1-2 meg downstream.
I believe it is a node issue and it is not going to change any time soon. On top of this I have basic cable tv service which is terrible. I have several channels which come in poorly and I am not getting the full use of my new LCD TV. I understand that Sympatico is also enforcing the caps but I am paying the $35.00 extra for unlimited.

I guess I'll see how things go.

i was a clong time customer with bell. bell has what they call traffic management(throttling) on p2p and torrents. they throttle them at 30kb per second. the unlimited bandwidth is not a reality.if they think you are using too much bandwidth they will send you a letter.there is no set limit what they say is excessive. its your choice good luck.

It should only be $25 extra for unlimited.

ii) $2.00 modem rental
In the case of the model rental, I thought it was included in the advertised prices.

Since when is Bell offering VDSL in Peterborough?

It's included in the Sympatico advertised price, but NOT in the "Better Bell Home" prices being advertised.

Did that make sense to you?

So you are paying $40 less, but still paying the $30 extra bandwidth charge, all the while probably getting less than half the speed... Ooookay then.

I would try and get this bundle price in writing
I have been victim, as have friends and relatives to salespeople saying you will save "X" amount, and then when you get your first bill, you are surprised
If you have it in writing, what you are paying for (tv channels, phone services, bandwidth caps) then you will have some ammo to call and complain...
The grass isn't always as green, or greener on the other side, even if the sales driven CSR tells you so

Bundle discounts can take up to 8 weeks to be applied to the bill, so your first bill or so could be off.

If your looking to save some cash, there are CLEC's in Peterborough that can offer you home phone and internet.

The internet wouldn't be restricted by any of the bandwidth restrictions that Bell and/or Cogeco are implementing. The only thing that they wouldn't be able to offer you is your TV service.

In another thread on this forum it was announced that Bell is completely eliminating unlimited bandwidth so they can charge you for every gig you go beyond the 60 gig cap. If you check the Bell.ca site you'll see that the unlimited option has already been removed, you can only buy an extra 30 gigs for an additional $10/month.

The Unlimited option is to longer be advertising but customers can still get if they ask for it, as per Bell's new policy.

It wouldn't be the first time Bell said one thing and did the exact opposite. Unless you get it in writing I wouldn't trust anything a customer service rep says, it always comes back to bite the customer in the end.

Even if you get it in writing you can't trust what they say. Search for both what the Bell ombudsman wrote about the cross border outsourced Hotmail service, and search for Bell's email about how everyone will be informed, and given notice, and given an opt-out on change of bandwidth policy and throttling.

So no. Even if its in writing Bell is a company that goes back on its word and is untrustworthy.

I am a private contractor (ex-bell tech) who does wiring for customers of bell and cogeco in peterborough. Based on the hundreds of feedbacks I have received from my customers I would only recommend cogeco here even if you live across the road from the CO on hunter street. The only time I recommend bell is if the customer has to receive collect calls (their husband is in prison, yes it has happened) or they call outside north america. Even then I recommend nexicom, as their customer support is excellent, but they have no TV offerings yet.
