I helping to help a family member who has lost the ability to send email but can still receive in OE. The error is error 10060 connection to the server has failed. Here is what I tried so far:
Deleted the original wowway account and added it again. Result still can receive but no sent.
Tried safe mode
Turned off firewall

| reply to sportsdadmi you would normally see this when your isp starts blocking a mail port, but i would think wow would let port 25 traffic pass to their own mail servers. I guess something could have gotten blocked by accident. Anyone know if an alternate port works beside 25 that can be used with the wow mail server so he could try that as an experiment? |

| Do you know what speed tier they have? IF so do a speed test here, »speed.try.wideopenwest.com/ , and see if the speed is correct. IIRC, the people that have the e-mail blocking boot file also have slower speeds. If that is the case then another call to WOW is needed and hopefully someone that knows what they're doing can help you. |

The only way to fix this is to call WOW and see if that is the case. They'll also block you from sending if they detect any virus/phishing e-mails being sent through their e-mail servers from one of your computers. And anyone who has a speed tier above Value would immediately notice the slowdown in speed as well. |

| We changed the outgoing port from 25 to 587. Still no go. Right now my Uncle is recieving mail in outlook express but has to go to the wow web page to send. In my opinion wow could be much more helpful with this issue. Thanks for any more ideas anyone has on how to fix this.

1 edit | reply to sportsdadmi you should test your ability to connect to the outgoing smtp server for wow
open a dos box ( from windows, press the start button, then run and type cmd.exe )
when the black box opens up, type
telnet smtp.mail.wowway.com 25
you should get a response something like
220 pop-8.dnv.wideopenwest.com ESMTP Sendmail 8.12.8/8.12.8; Thu, 6 Mar 2008 17:40:36 -0600
type something like this:
helo host.com
you should get a response something like
250 pop-8.dnv.wideopenwest.com Hello d192-24-000-000.try.wideopenwest.com [24.192.000.000], pleased to meet you
you then can type quit and the connection will terminate
the procedure above will at least test your ability to connect to wow's server
see also »www.msexchange.org/articles/MS_E···net.html for an explanation and samples of how it should work |

| reply to sportsdadmi Thanks for the reply. I tried telnet from my home PC and could not connect to smtp.mail.wowway.com 25 (or 587) I could connect to pop3.mail.wowway.com 110. In addition I tried the comcast mail servers and could only connect to the smtp server on port 587 which I have my email programs set to. This happened two weeks ago when I could not send email from here and comcast techs told me to change to port 587. Is this port 25 blocking issue getting to be a big issue?
Thanks,
Brian |

telnet smtp.mail.wowway.com 25 Trying 64.233.207.14... Connected to smtp.mail.wowway.com. If you get connected, but get a 550 Access denied like above, that is normal. WOW will reject attempts to use their network for sending mail from non-wow internet connections.
If you are unable to connect on port 25, and you are on a wow connection (one thread elsewhere here had one user actually connected to his neighbors comcast wi-fi connection) the block could be in your firewall, or anti-virus, or as has been suggested above port 25 has been blocked by wow due to their suspecting a spam virus.

Also check the Windows HOSTS file. Some popup blockers or other programs edit it to block sites. |

join:2001-03-14 Harrison Township, MI | reply to sportsdadmi I tried telnet from his PC yesterday and did not connect at smtp.wowway.com on port 25 or 587. Doesn't this become a issue with wowway? They must be blocking the ports at his modem. He does not have a router.
Thanks,
Brian |

| Try this. Go here, »www1.wowway.com/wow/wow.aspx?Con···=Nothing, and click on the contact link for Michael Furst. And explain to him what's going on and how nobody on the phone is will or able to help you remove the block from his modem. He should get someone on it fairly quickly. |
